• OF013-006001 Castle - unclassified
  Description

  Situated on a rise of ground on natural island surrounded by bog. Small two storey square shaped house (6.5m N-S; 6.2m E-W; wall T 0.9m) built with roughly coursed limestone rubble with wooden floor carried in small rectangular joists. Access by a destroyed flat headed door at the centre of E wall which gives access to the ground floor which is lit by two gun loops in the W wall and a destroyed window at E end of N wall. Possible wooden stairs located against S wall because of lack of features indicating floor joists . The first floor is well lit by four large windows one in each wall with a fireplace built into the NE angle of the room with rectangular chimney stack above. No dressed stone visible. Probably 17th-century in date with possible destroyed bawn to the E of the building. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).   Description

  The site (Wth 0.94m; D 0.14m) is orientated E-W and composed if two layers of longitudinal birch roundwoods and hazel and alder brushwood (diam. 0.03-0.07m) on a substructure of brushwood and twigs (diam. 0.003-0.025m).   Description

  This site (L 235m; Wth 1.29m; D 0.09m) is orientated E-W and appears to extend from Leitra bog island to a gravel knoll in the bog. It was recorded over several fields but in some it has been destroyed. It varies in construction along its length. At one sighting it consists of a possible hurdle panel of hazel brushwood (diam. 0.01.5-0.032m) and at another location it is composed of longitudinal birch roundwoods.   Description

  The site (L 1.1m min.; Wth 0.6m) is orientated E-W and composed of a damaged hurdle panel of hazel brushwood. Four sails (diam. 0.016-0.024m) and 15 rods (av. diam. 0.03m) were recorded.   Description

  An irregular deposit of worked brushwood (diam. 0.02-0.025m) with evidence of burning on one piece. Recorded by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College, Dublin) in 1992. The evidence is not sufficient to warrant its acceptance as the remains of an archaeological monument.
