- KD022-008 Ringfort - rath
Description
In level tillage at the N-foot of the Redhills. A heavily overgrown, circular area (diam. 31m) is defined by a substantial earthen bank (int. H 0.9-1.8m; Wth 5.5m at W-7m at E; ext. H 2.8m), and by an outer fosse (Wth 1.2m; D 1.1-1.8m) SSW-N-SE, which is partially dug out to form a livestock watering pond at E, and which is disturbed by a minor road skirting the monument SE-SSW. A shallow drain (Wth 1.2m; D 0.2-0.4m) is dug inside the bank along the S. A gap in the bank at ESE (Wth 5m) may be an enlarged original entrance, and while there is no corresponding causeway, the fosse is partially dug out in this area. - KD022-009 Barrow - ring-barrow
Description
Prominently sited on the Redhills, in mixed pasture and tillage, with panoramic aspect in all directions except to the W where higher ground rises less than 50m away from the monument. A low but well-defined, sub-circular, multivallate ringbarrow with three enclosing banks and two intervening fosses (ext. diams. 45.3m E-W; 41m N-S). A relatively small, sub-circular, central area (diams. 7m N-S; 6.5m E-W) is defined by a low, earthen, inner bank (int. H 0.2-0.3m; Wth 2.5m at N-5.1m at E; ext. H 0.3m), a shallow fosse (av. Wth 2m; D 0.2m), a middle bank (int. H 0.2m; Wth 3m at S-6m at E) which has been seriously poached by livestock SW-W-NW, a second fosse (av. Wth 2m; D 0.3m), and by a third, outer bank (int. H 0.3m at N-1m at W; av. Wth 6.5m; ext. H 0.3-0.6m). The monument is virtually covered in thistles. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 05 December 2011
