- KD032-031 Church
Description
At the N end of a graveyard (KD032-031001-). Only the grass-covered foundation line (L 5m N-S; Wth 2.3m; H 0.2-0.4m) of the W gable wall is visible. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 29 October 2013
- KD032-031001 Graveyard
Description
On a low but moderately steep-sided pasture ridge. A roughly D-shaped area (c. 36m E-W) with a straight E side (L c. 26m) is enclosed by a low modern, mortared stone wall. The interior is generally higher (H 1m) than the surrounding ground, except between WSW and WNW where it is level with the outer ground. The interior is covered in long grass with the N-third having a lot of nettle growth. Traces of a ruined church (KD032-031----) are visible in the N sector, and legible gravemarkers date to the 18th-century. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 29 October 2013
- KD032-032 Ringfort - rath
Description
Mid way along a short gentle SW-facing pasture slope. A fairly poorly preserved, heavily poached, circular area (int. diams. 221.m E-W; 21.7m N-S) is defined by a very broad but denuded earthen bank (Wth 8-10m; int. H 0.6-1.1m; ext H over base of outer fosse 1.2m at W-2.3m at N), a fosse (base Wth 2.8m at W-4.2m at E), SE-W-N-E, and by a second, outer bank (Wth 3.2m at S-5.7m at N; ext H 0.3m), SE-W-N-ENE. A gap (Wth 3m) in the inner bank at ENE is probably the original entrance, but there is no visible trace of a corresponding causeway in the heavily poached fosse outside. The interior is covered in strong nettle and thistle growth. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 29 October 2013
- KD032-033 Castle - unclassified
Description
In a farmyard near the W-edge of a low pasture ridge. According to Tickell (1960, 370, 373), Blackrath Castle and its lands were leased by the Eustaces in 1536. A fairly poorly preserved small, two-storied rectangular structure (int. 5.4m E-W; 4m N-S; ext 7.45m E-W; 6.4m N-S; H c. 6m) is built of thin randomly coursed flags, and is abutted at W by a later building. Entered through a plain lintelled doorway (Wth 1.2m) in the N wall, the ground floor is lit by two loops, in the E and W walls. Ground floor-level is roofed by a barrel vault, orientated E-W (H 2.1m). Although there is no internal access to the upper floor levels, an infilled square ope (L 0.8m; Wth 0.8m) in the underside of the vault may have allowed internal access to occur. Externally, the wall faces carry a lot of ivy, but a rectangular ope (Wth. c. 1m) can be made out in the S wall at first floor-level. Its small size and lack of direct easy access to the upper floor-levels suggest it may have been the defensive tower of a bawn? Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 30 October 2013
