- KD021-007 Mound
Description
Prominently sited on a hilltop (OD 310 feet, and formerly the site of an OS Trigonometrical Station) with commanding views of the surrounding countryside. A fairly high, sub-circular, earthen mound (base diams. 22.4m NW-SE; 19.35m NE-SW; upper diams. 4.8m NW-SE; 3.15m NE-SW; max H 4.8m at SW; min H 2.9m at NE) has a concrete water tank built into its upper surface (dims. L 2.15m NE-SW; Wth 1.6m). An earthen ramp (dims. L c. 36m NW-SE; Wth c. 6m) approaching the mound from the NW noted in 1958 (SMR file) and interpreted as not ancient, has since been levelled. Description
Visible on an aerial photograph (GSI N 415-6) as the cropmark of a possible penannular enclosure, open towards the NW. In level pasture. Not visible at ground level. Description
When spoken to during archaeological fieldwork in 1984/5, the landowner recalled that during the erection of telegraph poles to the S of, and in the same field as, 'The Mount' (KD021-007----), a 'crouched burial' was uncovered. Description
Detached four-bay single-storey direct entry thatched house, extant 1937, on a rectangular plan with single-bay single-storey flat-roofed projecting porch. Renovated, ----, to accommodate alternative use. Hipped (south) and pitched (north) oat straw thatch roof, rope twist ridge with paired exposed hazel stretchers having exposed scallops, rendered chimney stacks having capping supporting terracotta pots, and remains of exposed stretchers to eaves having exposed steel scallops. Roughcast battered walls; rendered concrete block crow stepped wall (north) with rendered frame. Square-headed door opening with concealed dressings framing timber panelled door. Square-headed window openings with concrete or rendered sills, and concealed dressings framing replacement timber casement windows. Road fronted on a corner site.
