- KD022-025 Burial
Description
In his description of three La Tene glass beads in the National Museum of Ireland's collections, Raftery (1972, 14, 16) notes that one bead was discovered about 1899 in, according to Lord Walter Fitzgerald, a gravel pit with human bones. In a subsequent note, Fitzgerald (1909, 105) recorded that the bead was found at the top of a hill at a depth of 18 inches (c. 0.45m) below the surface; at the same place (a gravel pit) where 12 skeletons were found. Description
Found during road widening along the N verge of the road in October 1953. A skeleton, orientated E-W, lay some 0.6m below the ground surface in hard, yellow clay subsoil. No trace of a grave-cut or grave goods were noted. A similar burial (KD022-027----) had been discovered several months previously, nearby to the E (OPW Topographical files, 1953). Renovated, c.1980, with single-bay single-storey flat-roofed projecting glazed porch added to front. Gable-ended roof with clay pantiles. Clay ridge tiles. Rendered chimney stacks. Timber eaves and bargeboards. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Flat-roofed to porch. Bitumen felt. Roughcast walls. Painted. Square-headed window openings (one in tripartite arrangement). Rendered sills. 2/2 timber sash windows (1/1 sidelights to tripartite opening). Fixed-pane timber windows to porch. Square-headed door opening to porch. Glazed timber door.
