- KE045-017 Ringfort - rath
Description
Internal diam. 23.6m A circular univallate rath situated on a NW facing slope near the foot of Flemingstown mountain. The level interior is enclosed by a single earthen bank and contains the remains of 2 rectangular house sites. The bank reaches its maximum internal height of 1.7m on the S, uphill side and its maximum external height of 2.1m on the downhill side, at NW. For a short distance at N the bank has been removed and the site is defined only by a scarp, the interior being raised above the external ground level on this downhill side. The NE part of the bank doubles as a field boundary and the stone facing along its inner face here probably relates to this secondary use. It is not clear which of the 4 breaks in the bank represents the original entrance. The house-sites lie end to end in a SSE-NNW alignment, the N house abutting the ringfort bank at N. N house: The remains consist of a raised rectangular platform, very slightly hollowed in the interior. It is 5.5m long, 4.4m wide and .4m high. S house: This lies 2m S of the N house site and consists also of a raised rectangular platform. It is 5.4m long, at least 2.8m wide, and .3m high. Its N and E limits are unclear. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 422. - KE045-018 Ringfort - rath
Description
Internal diam. 61.8m ENE-WSW, 48.5m NNW-SSE Lismore/An Lios Mór: A large, roughly oval enclosure situated on a gentle NNW facing slope of Flemingstown mountain. The single earthen enclosing bank is a maximum of .8m high internally and 1.55m high externally and averages 2.2 to 2.8m in width at base. It is disturbed and partly removed along the S side where a NE-SW field wall skirts its outer edge. The bank has also been removed for a distance of 23m at N. There are slight traces of an external fosse on either side of this latter gap. It is not clear where the original entrance was located. The remains of a small sub-rectangular hut are located directly W of the large N gap. A low bank of earth and stones encloses an area 2.5m x 3.2m in extent. The bank is up to .5m high and c. 1.1m wide, and either of the gaps in the E and S walls could represent the original entrance. The remainder of the interior of the rath is occupied by a series of NW-SE cultivation ridges. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 423. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. - KE045-029 Ringfort - rath
Description
Internal diam. 20m N-S, 18m E-W This roughly D-shaped univallate rath is located on the steep N slopes of Flemingstown mountain. The fairly level interior is enclosed by a single earthen bank which is a maximum of 2m high. A field fence skirts the W side of the site and the bank may be somewhat modified in this area. The gap at SW is a secondary feature. The original entrance faces ENE and was originally probably c. 1.4m wide. Its S side is marked by a large upright slab now partly collapsed. Because of disturbance and erosion of the bank, it is now possible to enter the site on either side of this stone which would be 1.28m high if erect. A paved pathway is visible for a very short distance inside the entrance. The interior is occupied by a series of N-S cultivation ridges. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 421. - KE045-030 Ringfort - rath
Description
Internal diam. 18.5m N-S, 20.8m E-W A sub-circular univallate rath (KE045-030----) situated in rough, wet pasture, on a gentle NNW facing slope at the foot of Flemingstown mountain. The earthen enclosing bank ranges in height from 1.3m internally and .6m externally on the upslope side to .8m internally and 1.25m externally on the downslope side; it averages 2.15m in width at base. In the SE quadrant, the inner face is revetted with stone. This facing is unusual in that it consists of short stretches of drystone walling separated by upright slabs. At NNE and NNW, the bank has been levelled for short distances of 5.5m and 6.5m respectively. The 4.5m wide gap at E probably marks the location of the entrance. A pair of conjoined huts abut the stone-faced inner flank of the bank at S. They are roughly circular in plan and measure c. 4.7m in diameter internally. The only visible entrance lies in the E side of the E hut. The W hut appears not to have had an independent entrance. The huts are enclosed by earthen banks, .45 to .8m high, with some traces internally and externally of drystone facing. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 420. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
