• KE030-077 Enclosure
  Description

  'Located in a field on gently south sloping land, which has been reclaimed, although it is still marshy and wet in places. A small stream forms the southern boundary of the field, which affords extensive views mainly to the south and west. This is a penannular ditch which has an opening c.5.00m wide to the south. The banks of this enclosure are an average of 8.5m wide and have an average height of 1.00m in height. These enclose a central area 14.9 in diameter. The bank is composed of earth and small stones. Total dimensions of the site are 32.0m N-S by 32.0m E-W.' Compiled by Michael Connolly for the Archaeological Survey of Ireland as part of a survey of the Lee Valley area in 1996-97. • KE030-078 Earthwork
  Description

  'Located in the same field as above [KE030-077----], but on the southernmost side nearest the small stream is a large meandering earthwork. Its total length is in excess of 90.0m. It is 15.0m in width on the western side, and an average of 1.00m in height. At first it runs in a northerly direction before curving back on itself towards the river. At the point nearest the river the width of the bank spreads to 20.0m and extends to 1.50m in height. The bank then continues in a northeasterly direction. This is unlikely to be the remains of a flood-relief embankment as the stream is a very insubstantial tributary of the River Lee and therefore would probably not have been exposed to such works as were carried out in the last century.'   Description

  'A crescentic mound, measuring 22m E-W and 15m N-S. The mound is located adjacent to a stream that runs parallel to the site, 25m to the north. Burnt shattered stone and charcoal blackened soil is visible where animals have eroded the base of the mound. The mound remains to a height of 1.1m and the trough area, measuring 6.5m N-S and 5.9m E-W opens to the north, towards the stream.'   Description

  'The two cropmarks [KE030-104----, KE030-105----] were noted on two separate aerial photographs, one black and white, the other colour. The black and white was taken from 5200 feet, the colour was slightly lower at 5000 feet. On visiting the site it was discovered that the field had undergone intensive reclaimation and cultivation. Deep ploughing had taken place for the purpose of growing barley. No trace of either of these sites could be seen on the ground. The aerial photographic evidence would suggest that the sites were circular with a diameter of approximately 20m. The sites have been interpreted as ploughed out barrows (Connolly 1996, 51).'
