- WI013-029001 Church
Description
National Monument in state ownership No. 267. Situated on a gentle E-facing slope in Kilcoole village. A nave (int. dims. 8.75m x 5.2m) and chancel (int. dims. 5.6m x 2.93m) church, with an extension to the nave at the W (int. dims. 8.6m x 5.3m), all built of uncoursed rubble. There is a low segmental chancel arch with a tapering opening immediately above. The base of the corbelling for the nave and chancel roofs survives, as does the upper line of the nave roof which projects from the gable above the chancel arch. Simple round-headed windows occur in the E gable and the S wall of the nave with simple tapering windows at a high level in the E and W gables. The S window has bevelled sandstone jambs and arch stones. A modern wall projects 1m from the N and S walls with a gate dividing the nave. The W door is slightly off-centre and has a low segmental arch. The extension at the W is a later addition and has a door, marked only at foundation level, at the W end of the S wall. Both the W and N walls are substantially intact. A granite cross-slab as been placed against the chancel arch at the E end of the nave and a square granite font with rounded corners stands immediately inside the door of the nave. The graveyard is a quadrangular enclosure (dims. 35m E-W; 28m N-S) defined by a 19th-century wall. It contains a large number of early 18th-century headstones. (O'Flanagan 1928, 62-4) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 December 2008

- WI013-062001 Bullaun stone (present location)
Description
Recorded by Price in this notebook, dated 4th May 1959, as follows; ‘Patrick Healy told me that a bullaun stone had been found near Kilquade Church and had been brought to the church by Father Masterson, the parish priest. I went to see it today. It is at the E side of the church, placed on the stump of a large tree. It is a very curious stone, a block of granite about 3ft. 3 in. by 2 ft. 3in. [which] has three hollows or basins, much broken, on the one side and a large oval hollow on the opposite side. The large hollow has been placed mouth downwards on the stump, so it is not easy to measure: but it appeared to be (approximately) 23in. by 13in. and 9in. deep, with a hollow worn or ground smooth. On top there are three hollows, all broken on the outer edges: (a) three quarters complete: 12in. x 10in. and 11in. deep: it is the end of the longer axis that is broken away, so the 12in. is an estimate. (2) about half remaining: 8in. deep and it was probably about 10in. in diameter. (3) very much broken away: it was probably about 10in. in diameter: I could not measure the depth. [drawing] This is a rough drawing of the top of this tone with the large oval hollow indicated underneath. The edges of the stone have been broken away, it would seem with a sledgehammer; they are not worn away by weather. The hollows of the three basins are smoothly and evenly rounded.’ (Corlett and Weaver 2002, 644-5). Compiled by: Paul Walsh Date of upload: 30 October 2012
- WI013-125 Burnt spread
Description
Situated on E bank of stream which marks townland boundary with Bullford, mill race located to W. Three distinct areas of burnt spread material in close proximity were identified during the digging of an electricity services trench in an area on the western boundary of a housing development site. The services trench measured 1.3m deep by 0.75m wide and runs parallel to a small stream which forms the western boundary of the development site. This trench has been partially backfilled covering ducting pipes for the electricity cables. The excavation of the trench revealed a layer of bunt mound material consisting of heat shattered stones located approx. 40cm below the top sod. The most substantial spread was visible on both faces of the trench and ran for a length of approx. 6m, the other burnt spreads were only visible on the E face of the trench and were mainly obscured by the backfill material. There was no surface evidence of any burnt mounds or fulachta fiadh in the area where the services trench was excavated. No other archaeological activity was noted in the services trench. Archaeological testing under licence No. 17E0593 had been carried out on the development site along a geophysical survey carried out under detection consent No. 17E0187.
