• CL033-009 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  At the narrow crest of a N-S ridge with the ground sloping away to W and E. Listed as 'Enclosure' in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996). A raised oval grass-covered area (dims. 27m N-S; 23.4m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.6m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.8m) SSE-S and a slight fosse (Wth of base 2.5m; D 0.1m) SSE-SW, which is continued by a berm (Wth 2.2m) and outer field bank SW-NW. Elsewhere the perimeter is defined by a scarp (H 1.2-1.4m generally to 1.8m at E), which merges into the steep slope at E. There are ramp entrances at S (Wth 2m) and NNW (Wth 5m), both of which probably receive modern usage. The W part of the interior is level, but the E part slopes down severely to the E (H 1.5m).   Description

  Situated on a rise towards the bottom of a S-facing slope. Listed as 'Enclosure' in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996). A subcircular grass and scrub-covered area (int. dims. 28m E-W; 25m N-S) defined by the remnants of an overgrown stone spread (Wth 2-3m; H 0.1-1m) and hedge N-SE, and S-W, which is replaced by a drystone wall (H 1m) elsewhere. • CL033-139003 Font (present location)
  Description

  Situated outside the W door of St. Joseph’s RC church in Kilnamona (Ballynabinnia Td.). The bowl (H 0.4m) of an irregularly carved font removed c. 1932 from a medieval church (CL033-006005-) in Kilnamona Td. some 250m to SW (http://historyofkilnamona.org/church.html. Accessed 22 January 2020). The bowl is oval in plan (max. ext. diam. 0.7m; int. dims. 0.55m x 0.53m) with rounded protrusions (D 0.69m) on the exterior forming four ‘corners’. The interior slopes inward towards the base which is sand-filled to support a modern ceramic bowl of holy water. Beneath the external corner protrusions (H 0.17m) the font tapers in towards the shaft. There are no visible carvings on the exterior. It is of limestone with much lichen and sits on a modern concrete shaft and base. A trickle of water flows from a crack in the N face. The following images have been uploaded: 1. • Saint Joseph's Catholic Church, church/chapel, 1840–1845 · Regional interest
  Description

  Freestanding gable-fronted double-height Roman Catholic church, built 1842, with three-bay side elevations. Projecting porch added to entrance and sacristy added to rear, 1969. Pitched artificial slate with metal cross finials. Roughcast rendered walls with cut-stone quoins. Lancet opening with cut-stone surrounds and leaded glass. Timber doors. Retaining interior features. Brass plaque in porch : "This porch has been erected / as a memorial to the late Mike McTigue / World light heavyeight champion boxer / 1923-25 by his friends in the USA / born in Kilnamona 1892 died in New York 1966 /R.I.P. / Dec. 1969". Cast-iron belfry to site. Cut-stone gate piers set in rubble stone crenellated boundary walls.
