Description
Located on a fairly level landscape. A gradiometer survey (17R0229) by Target Archaeological Geophysics of an extensive development area of c. 75 ha in the townlands of Loughsallagh, Portan, and Gunnocks, identified numerous anomalies of potential archaeological interest. Targeted archaeological testing (18E0013) by T. Coughlan in 2018 and M. Piera (19E0211) in 2019 was able to demonstrate that many of these were of fairly modern agricultural origin. However, sixteen locations were set aside for further investigation, which was undertaken by J. Whitaker under the licence (18E0013) between the beginning of April and the end of July 2019, and all but four of these proved to be of archaeological interest. A single rectangular and flat-bottomed pit (dims 1.24m x 1.1m; max. D 0.15m) was filled with three layers of grey-black silty clay. Charcoal flecks were only present in the middle layer but the base and edges of the cut were oxidised, indicating burning and its probable use as a charcoal-making pit. No artefacts were recovered. A large pit or well (dims 2.1m x 1.8m; max. D 1.5m) that was filled with silty clays and varying amounts of burnt stone and some wood fragments was at the centre of a group of nine pits (dims 0.5m x 0.3m; D 0.08m to 3.36m x 1.3m; D 0.3m) filled with similar deposits. A subrectangular pit (dims 2.18m x 1m; D 0.36m) just NE of the well is regarded as a trough and cut an earlier trough (dims 1.4m x 1.2m). Both troughs were filled with a dark grey silty clay with burnt stone and charcoal inclusions. The larger trough had decayed or burnt timbers along its sides. There was a cluster of smaller pits and a single post-hole just S of the well, and there were also three small spreads (dims < 1m) of grey marl with charcoal and burnt stone inclusions. No artefacts were recovered. (Whitaker 2020 8-11, Site 3) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 8 November 2021

Five pits (dims 0.43m x 0.33m; D 0.09m to 2.7m x 1.83m; max. 0.39m) in a confined area (dims 8m x 6m) were filled with sand or sandy clays that had charcoal flecks and inclusions of burnt stone. There were also two small post-holes. With no evidence of a trough or a mound, and no artefacts, the pits could be interpreted as pot-boilers. Description
Situated on a level landscape with a small meandering NW-SE watercourse just to the SW. Targeted archaeological testing (15E0109) by G. Hull (2015; excavations.ie 2015:420) on features highlighted in a gradiometer survey (15R0005) conducted by Shanarc (2015) identified spreads of burnt mound material (excavations.ie 2015:420). This monument initially manifested as a burnt stone spread (diam. 5.4m; D 0.2m) with a probable trough immediately to its S. It was subsequently completely excavated (15E0583) by P. Duffy as Site H (excavations.ie 2016:0050). This consists of two troughs. An oval trough (dims 2m x 1.54m; max. D 0.61m) with steep sides and a flat base had four fills including a layer of water-rolled smooth stones and a charcoal-rich soil sealing the base. The main fill was a charcoal-rich sandy clay and a sample of charcoal from this produced a C14 date of 1684-1526 cal. BC. There are a few stakeholes in the vicinity and just 0.3m to the N was a circular, steep-sided and flat-bottomed trough (diam. 1.1-1.2m; max. D 0.9m) with four fills of brown clayey silt that had varying amounts of charcoal and heat-shattered stone. A sample from the main fill produced a radiocarbon date of 1689-1530 cal. BC. A subcircular pit (dims 1.2m x 0.9m; max. D 0.24m) just to the W of the larger trough was steep-sided but with an undulating base and a single fill of black-grey silt with lenses of yellow clay and inclusions of burnt stone. There were some other small features under two small spreads of broken and burnt stone (dims 1.4m x 0.62m; T 0.03m: diam. 2.6m x 2.5m; T 0.05m), all that remained of the mound. No artefacts were recovered but the dates indicate that it was in use during the Middle Bronze Age. Archaeological monitoring (15E0577) by P. Duffy, D. Bayle and J. Whitaker of topsoil stripping over a large area (c. 92 ha.) conducted intermittently between Dec. 2015 and October 2018 uncovered 37 locations of potential archaeological importance (excavations.ie 2016:051). Each of these was further investigated by the same archaeologists under different licences. At Site 23 excavation (16E0337) by D. Bayley recorded (excavations. ie 2016:550) an isolated pit (dims 1.48m c 1.98m; D 0.15m) with two layers of sandy clays. Alder and hazel charcoal was confined to the lower layer and a sample of hazel yielded a C14 date of 706-893 cal. AD (FTMC-HR36-21), placing it in the early medieval period. Description
At Site 8, which was excavated (16E0117) by D. Bayley (excavations.ie 2016:532), an isolated spread (dims 0.6m x 0.4m; T 0.03m) of a silty clay with inclusions of charcoal and a small amount of undiagnostic burnt bone was recorded. A flint scraper and a piece of debitage was found on its surface. The charcoal was dominated by ash with low levels of alder and oak, and a sample of alder charcoal provided a C14 date of 3521-3371 cal. BC (FTMC-HR36-3) placing it in the Neolithic. Description
At Site 17 excavation (16E0194) by D. Bayley recorded (excavations. ie 2016:541) an isolated pit (diam. 0.5-0.52m; D 0.13m) with a fill of grey/yellow silty clay beneath a black-grey silty clay. Both layers had charcoal flecks, but burnt bone and burnt clay was confined to the lower layer. There was no evidence of burning and no dating is available. Each of these was further investigated by the same archaeologists under different licences. At Site 18, excavated (16E0196) by D. Bayley (excavations.ie 2016:542), three pits (dims 0.98m x 0.59m; D 0.1m: 0.69m x 0.55m; D 0.08m: 1.1m x 0.96m; D 0.38m) in a small area (dims 30m E-W; 10m E-W) were recorded. They had fills of silty clays with charcoal and evidence of fire-reddening of the bases so they were probably hearths. No artefacts were recovered but a piece of oak charcoal from one of the hearths provided a C14 date of 3315-2919 cal. BC (FTMC-HR36-17), placing it in the Early Neolithic. At Site 33 excavation (17E0205) recorded an oval pit (dims 1.5m N-S; 0.6m E-W; D 0.09m) with a smaller pit (diam. 0.5m; D 0.11m) just to the S. They both had similar fills of charcoal-rich dark brown silty clays. No artefacts were recovered and no dating is available. Each of these was further investigated by the same archaeologists under different licences. At Site 3, excavation (16E0064) by P. Duffy recorded (excavations. ie 2016:557) an isolated pit (dims 2.5m x 1m; D 0.42m) that was cut by an open field gully (Wth 1.2m). Its basal fill of brown/grey clay with charcoal was beneath a grey/brown clay with charcoal. There was no evidence of burning in situ and it is thought to represent hearth waste. No artefacts were recovered and no dating is available. (Duffy et. al. 2021, 34) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 26 April, 2023 Duffy, P., Fairhead, S. & F.
