  Description

  Not listed in the SMR (1992) or the RMP (1996). A curious carved jambstone found in the early 19th century among the ruins of Kilvoydan church (CL017-119002-). On one face is a fairly crude representation of the martyrdom of St. Sebastian. The face is much worn and the long wavy hair literally stands on end and reaches the very top of the stone. The hands are crossed and bound and the body is shot through with six arrows. The lower portion is carved with rich 15th-century foliage (Swinfen 1992, 89). The stone was removed to Corofin chapel and is now housed in the Heritage Centre in Corofin. Original location record CL017-119006-. (McNamara 1900, 29-30) CL017-116004-_01.jpg attached. • CL017-117 Enclosure
  Description

  Towards the top of a gentle S-facing slope. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). Hachured as a circular ringfort (est. dia. c. 38m) on the first edition (1842) of the OS 6-inch map. However, by the time the later OS 25-inch plan (1897) was drawn, only a chord of enclosing bank (L c. 24m) from WSW-W-WNW was recorded, together with a later field boundary running N-S through the interior of the monument. When inspected in 1999, the E-portion of the monument (to the E of the later N-S boundary wall) was not clearly visible at ground level. However, the W portion (to the W of the later N-S wall) was traceable in undulating, rough pasture, where it survived as an uneven D-shaped raised area (17m N-S; 10m E-W) of spoil-like material (H 0.3-0.8m) containing hollows, defined from W-NW by a curvilinear bank-like feature (Wth 1.5m; int. • CL017-119001 Ecclesiastical enclosure
  Description

  On a gentle SE-facing slope in pasture, overlooking Lough Atedaun c. 230m to the SE. Indicated on both the first (1842) and Cassini (1920) editions of the OS 6-inch map. This large oval-shaped ecclesiastical enclosure (diams. c. 115m WNW-ESE; c. 85m NNE-SSW) is defined from W-N-ENE and from SSE-S-SSW by a collapsed drystone wall overlying a grass-covered stony bank. From SE-SW-W the enclosing line is indicated by a curving laneway. Although no longer identifiable, Swan (1991, 63) suggested that the original entrance may have been at the E, based on the placement of a cross (CL017-119004-) just outside the enclosure there. The enclosure contains a graveyard (CL017-119003-) in the E sector which is also the site of ‘Kilvoydan Church’ (CL017-119002-). • CL017-119002 Church
  Description

  To the E of the centre of a graveyard (CL017-119003-) located in the E sector of a large ecclesiastical enclosure (CL017-119001-). Drawn as a rectangular structure and named ‘Kilvoydan Church (in ruins)’ on the first edition (1842) of the OS 6-inch map. Marked by a cross and named ‘Kilvoydan Church (Site of)’ on the later OS 25-inch plan (1897) and Cassini edition (1920) of the OS 6-inch map. No visible surface trace survives. The patron saint, Baighdean, is not mentioned in historical or ecclesiastical sources but several religious sites in Clare are dedicated to him/her (Macnamara 1900, 30; Swinfen 1992, 90). Macnamara (1900, 29) found no structural remains of this ‘old church’ but considered it ‘of much architectural and archaeological interest’ based on its stones which he found scattered at the site and reused as grave-markers. In or before the early 19th century, a 15th-century stone sculpture (CL017-119006-) was found in the graveyard (ibid., 29-30). In the 1960s or early 1970s a Romanesque corner corbel (H 0.56m; Wth 0.23m) carved with a man’s head (H 0.2m) was accidentally dug up in the graveyard (Harbison 1972, 5-6; Swinfen 1992, 90). • CL017-119003 Graveyard
  Description

  Situated in the E sector of a large ecclesiastical enclosure (CL017-119001-). This irregular pentagonal shaped graveyard (max. L 64m E-W; max. Wth 50m N-S) is defined by a double-faced masonry wall with a gate at the W. All of the legible grave markers are from c. 1900 onward. In the centre of the graveyard is the site of the medieval ‘Kilvoydan Church’ (CL017-119002-), of which there are no visible surface remains. Macnamara (1900, 29) found many stones from this church scattered in the graveyard and reused as grave-markers, leading him to conclude that the church must have been ‘of much architectural and archaeological interest’. In or before the early 19th century a 15th-century stone sculpture (CL017-119006-) was found in the graveyard (ibid., 29-30). In the 1960s or early 1970s a Romanesque corner corbel (H 0.56m; Wth 0.23m) carved with a man’s head (H 0.2m) was accidentally dug up in the graveyard (Harbison 1972, 5-6; Swinfen 1992, 90).   Description

  In gently SE-sloping pasture overlooking Lough Atedaun to the SE, and adjacent to a large ecclesiastical enclosure (CL017-119001-) which lies just to the W. Marked and labelled as ‘Cross’ on both the first (1842) and Cassini (1920) editions of the OS 6-inch map. This simple finial sandstone cross (H 0.43m; Wth 0.36m; T 0.1m) ‘ornamented with rude chisel work, and a good deal damaged’ (Macnamara 1900, 30) has a curving head and arms which narrow toward their ends (min. Wth 0.1m). The cross is set loosely at an angle in a vertical socket (L 36m; Wth 0.18m; D 0.17m) at the top of a rectangular sandstone base (H 0.74m; basal dims. L 0.57m; Wth 0.48m; top dims. L 0.59m; Wth 0.37m at base). The cross was not the object for which this base was intended and Macnamara (1900, 30) suggested that a cross shaft was originally set in the base. There is a worn lip (Wth 3.5cm; H 1cm) around the top edge of the socket and the rain-water which collected in the socket was widely believed to cure warts in both humans and animals (ibid.). Macnamara (ibid.) found the base set at the top of a ‘heap of stones faced by large, rough flags’. In 1999 the base was found oriented NE-SW (i.e., unlikely to be in its original position), standing in the centre of a square-shaped concrete platform (L 2.9m; Wth 2.7m) which was overshadowed by a whitethorn tree. Swan (1991, 63) suggested that this cross may have originally marked the approach to the entrance to the nearby ecclesiastical enclosure. In 1999, an architectural fragment (CL017-119005-)—a window jambstone—was identified in the graveyard (CL017-119003-) c. 18m to the W of the cross; this architectural fragment was subsequently moved to beside the cross (Large 2011).   Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy and Conn Herriott   Date of upload: 16-10-2025

  Description

  Situated adjacent to a cross (CL017-119004-) in gently SE-sloping pasture overlooking Lough Atedaun to the SE and adjacent to a large ecclesiastical enclosure (CL017-119001-) which lies just to the W. This architectural fragment (H 0.4m; L 0.3m; Wth 0.24m) is a window jambstone with a rebate for a shutter, a bar-hole for a glazing bar and an outer chamfer with a notch. In 1999, the stone was found in the graveyard (CL017-119003-) c. 18m to the W, when it was located c. 15m inside the graveyard gate. It was subsequently moved beside the cross (CL017-119004-) (Large 2011). • CL017-121 Crannog
  Description

  Located near the N shore of Lough Atedaun. This crannog—and a second one (CL017-118----), at the opposite end of the lake, c. 670m to the SW —were discovered by Fr. Thomas MacNamara in the summer of 1972, a very dry period when the lake level was exceptionally low. The finding was reported to Prof. Etienne Rynne of University College, Galway, who observed the site from the lakeshore in October 1972. Rynne (1981, 93) described the crannog as a ‘small conical pile of stones rising above the surface of the lake.’ Local sources who visited the crannog c. 1945-50 described four large wooden stakes near its centre, set in a square-like arrangement, and said that animal bones were also found at the crannog (ibid.).   Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy and Conn Herriott    Date of upload: 29-10-2025

  Attached six-bay two-storey market house set on raised plinth, built 1876, incorporating fabric of earlier building, c. 1700. Two-bay two-storey extension added to rear, c. 1985. Pitched Moher flagged roof with rendered chimneystacks. Single-pitched corrugated-iron roof to extension. Rendered walls with cut-stone plinth and buttresses. Inset crest and date plaque to front elevation. Three round-headed openings to ground floor and square-headed openings to first floor, all with replacement timber windows.

  Freestanding T-plan gable-fronted double-height Roman Catholic church, dated 1822, with three-bay gable front and two-bay nave. Two-bay single-storey sacristy added to rear, c. 1995, with inset archaeological fragment to exterior wall. Pitched artificial slate roof with bellcote over entrance gable having cross finial, moulded gable copings and cast-iron rainwater goods. Snecked stone walls with cut-stone quoins, niche to gable and blind openings flanking entrance door. Rendered walls to transepts. Four-centred arch door opening with timber sheeted double leaf doors, fanlight and label moulding. Lancet window openings, set in tripartite arrangement over entrance door. Replacement uPVC windows. Retaining interior features. Cut-stone gate piers set in rubble stone walls to site.

• The Old Workhouse, workhouse, 1840–1850 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached fifteen-bay single-storey building, built c. 1845, originally part of Corrofin Union Workhouse. Pitched slate roof with concrete ridge tiles, limestone eaves course, cast-iron rainwater goods, cut-stone gable copings, rendered chimneystacks and red clay pots. Hipped roof to return. Roughcast rendered walls over rubble stone construction and having cut-stone plinth. Timber sliding sash windows with stone sills. Segmental-arched door openings with cut-limestone architraves, timber matchboard doors and approached by limestone steps. Some openings now blocked or altered. Other buildings in complex now demolished.
