- CL033-085 Settlement deserted - medieval
Description
In the vicinity of Clonroad castle (CL033-085001-). The account of a raid on Clonroad castle in 1553 makes it clear that there was a substantial settlement associated with the castle and by 1703 Moland could still record ‘a few shops’ and the holding of two annual fairs there (Ó Dálaigh 1987, 16; Bradley, Halpin and King 1988, 80). The extent of the settlement is not known. Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 23 April 2014
- CL033-085001 Castle - tower house
Description
On low-lying ground on the S bank of the River Fergus. The main residence of the O’Brien kings of Thomond from the 13th to the 16th centuries began with an earthen stronghold (CL033-085006-) built by Conchobar Ó Briain c. AD 1267. An earlier earthen fortification (CL033-085005-) had been built on the N bank of the river in AD c. 1210 by Donnachad Cairprech Ó Briain. A tower house was built on the site probably c. 1470 (Ó Dálaigh 1987, 28) and by 1558 a large mansion (CL033-085002-) had been attached. The castle was besieged in 1600 and there is a record of the ‘great ould house’ being covered with slate or shingle in 1658. A sketch by Thomas Dineley in 1681 shows a large residence with a tower house, a six-bay mansion and a bawn surrounded by a curtain wall with an arched opening defended by a machicolation. No remains are visible on the ground although remnants were noted in the OS Letters in 1839 as being ‘indistinctly traceable’. Two adjacent bridges across the river (CL033-085003- and CL033-085004-) are known from the same 1681 sketch. A stone causeway linked the castle to the Franciscan Friary (CL033-082001-) 1km to the W in the centre of the town. In the 19th century a brewery and ‘Clonroad House’ were built on part of the same site. - CL033-085002 House - 16th/17th century
Description
A large mansion known as ‘caisléan caoimh gheal’ or ‘white castle’ was built on to the earlier tower house (CL033-085001-) at Clonroad, Ennis, between 1551 and 1558. Two adjacent bridges across the river (CL033-085003- and CL033-085004-) are also clearly visible in the sketch. A brewery and ‘Clonroad House’ were built on part of the site in the 19th century. - CL033-086 Excavation - miscellaneous
Description
On a fairly severe SE-facing slope down to the River Fergus, c. 100m to the E and in an area subject to periodic flooding. Listed as Earthwork complex in the SMR (1992) and in the RMP (1996). Due to the proximity of Clonroad Castle some 400m to the NW excavations were undertaken by John Hunt in 1946 during operations to build a sewage treatment plant. No structural features other than a drain were found. Some animal bone, mussel shells and one human skull fragment were found in the lower layers of fill which consisted of ash and charcoal. Fragments of medieval pottery were scattered across the site the most important being a fragment of Polychrome ware. Seven bronze fragments were noted, one being the spout of a vessel. - CL033-118 Rock scribing
Description
On flat low-lying ground beside a high wall at the entrance to Cregaun housing estate, c. 50m W of the public road. A limestone glacial erratic (c. 4m x 3m, H 2.5-3m) with an inscribed face on the lower SE side. The top half of the face is broken off. On inspection in 2000 the broken part lay on the ground nearby. The face had very large ears, a narrow straight nose and pointed eyes. Rynne (1985, 79) cites parallels with carvings dating to the Romanesque and Transitional periods. A small mound (CL033-177----) was noted very close to the erratic in 1996 during clearance in advance of construction of Cregaun estate and a small hut site (CL033-176----) was also noted nearby.
