- CL008-045006 Ringfort - rath
Description
On top of an E-W running ridge in pasture, within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL009-001001-). This subcircular rath (35.5m N-S; 30.5m E-W) is defined by a scarp (H 0.5-0.75m); a vague rise (H <0.1m; Wth 1m) from N to NE suggests the former presence of an earthen bank. A later earth and stone field bank, running NNE-SSW, cuts across the W half of the interior. Grass-covered field walls radiate from the scarp at SE, SSE and SSW. There is an enclosure (CL008-045007-) c. 86m to the NNE. Compiled by: Olive Alcock and Conn Herriott Date of upload: 4 October 2022
- CL008-045007 Enclosure
Description
In undulating pastureland and outcropping limestone, with higher ground to the SE, within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL009-001001-). This enclosure is defined by a roughly D-shaped steeply scarped earthen platform (31.7m E-W; H 0.55-0.9m) with a straight NW side (L c. 33m) consisting of a modern field wall. The field to the N of this wall has been quarried. Intermittent stretches of limestone drystone revetting (two/three courses high) are visible on the scarp face from SSE-W. The perimeter is overgrown from ENE-E. Two hollows (D 0.5m) are visible in the uneven rocky interior. Limestone slabs and boulders in the base of the larger hollow (7m NE-SW; 2m NW-SE) are suggestive of a possible collapsed souterrain but may be field clearance. There is a cashel (CL008-045008-) c. 68m to the NE, and a rath (CL008-045006-) c. 86m to the SSW. - CL008-048 Ringfort - rath
Description
On a prominent steep hill, now planted with coniferous forest, overlooking an extensive multiperiod field system (CL009-001001-) to the N. Hachured and named 'Lissateeaun' on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. Labelled as 'Lios an tSidheáin' on Robinson's (1977) map - a name translated as 'Fairy Hill' in the OS Letters (1839) (Comber 1997, 71). This subtriangular rath (36.7m E-W; 27m N-S) is defined by a steep scarp from SW-SE and by a deep round-bottomed fosse (Wth 4-6m) along the S side. The fosse is 7m below the level of the summit of the platform and 2m below the surrounding ground level. The scarp may be largely natural. Westropp (1915, 48) considered the rath to have been 'shaped out of the natural bluff, but raised and rounded so as to form a high flat-topped platform sufficiently imposing as seen from the road bridge to the east.' There is a slight berm c. 10m below the scarp at N, SE and SW, and traces of a possible outer bank at NNE. The interior dips towards the SW.
