- WA023-025 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated towards the top of a N and NE-facing slope. Circular area (diam. 30m NW-SE) covered in dense scrub and defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3-4m; int. H 0.8-1m; ext. H 0.8-1.3m) with internal stone-facing. An outer fosse (Wth of top 5.7m; Wth of base 2.2m; D 0.5m) survives NW-N only. The bank is curtailed by a NW-SE road wall at NE, and it is separated by field bank SE-NW from the field to the W. There is no visible entrance. Rath (WA023-024----) is at the top of the hill c. 290m to the SW and earthwork site (WA023-023----) is c. 170m to the NNW. Description
Marked as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 30m) incorporating a field bank E-S on the 1840 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Situated in pasture at the crest of a N-facing slope, it is not visible at ground level. Rath (WA023-025----) is c. 170m to the SSE. Description
Located at the S end of the summit of a NNW-SSE ridge. Overgrown oval area (dims. c. 35m N-S; 22.5m E-W) defined by an earth and stone bank, best preserved at W and N (at W: Wth 3.5m; int. H 1m; ext. H 1.4m), with a slight outer fosse (Wth c. 2m; D 0.1m) which may be a silted-up field drain S-N. The entrance (Wth 2.8m) is at E. The bank has been removed at SE (L 12m) to a spoil heap (dims. 9m x 5.5m; H 0.5-1.2m) on the perimeter at S. Rath (WA023-025----) is c. 290m to the NE.
