- WA031-046001 Ringfort - rath
Description
Marked as 'Castle (Site of)' on the 1840 and 1927 eds of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on a level landscape. This is a slightly raised and dished, grass-covered area (diam. 27m N-S; 26m E-W) defined by a fosse (Wth of top 10-15m; int. D 0.4m; ext. D 0.2m). There is no visible entrance. With a wide fosse or moat it may be a circular moated site. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Waterford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Description
Described as 'Castle (in Ruins)' with surviving remains on the 1840 ed. and as 'Castle (Site of)' on the 1927 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, but the monument is a rath (WA031-046001-). There is no record of a castle here other than local tradition (OS Name Book). Land at Ballynure and Lisnefinley was owned by Thomas FitzHarris in 1641 but there is no mention of a castle (Simington 1942, 32). Simington, R. C. (ed.) Description
On relatively flat terrain, in pasture. A long high hillock runs roughly E-W c. 300m to the S. A number of rectangular enclosures have been identified on LIDAR by Dowling (24 September 2016) immediately E and SE and S of a circular enclosure (WA031-046001-) and castle (WA031-046002-).
