Description
In reclaimed pasture, immediately E of the townland boundary with Goatisland and N of townland boundary with Ballybeg north. An enclosure (LI040-047002-) lies in the NW corner and two groups of barrows (LI040-049001/011-; LI040-048001-/048006-) lie to the SE and NE respectively. Not marked on OSi historic maps. Identified as linear cropmarks perpendicular to each other of a possible field system during examination of aerial photographs (BGE 1/50000 2549) taken 03/11/1984 on the Bórd Gáis Éireann gas pipeline. No surface remains visible on OSi orthophoto taken between 2005-12 and on Google Earth orthoimages. These linear cropmarks probably represent drainage or land reclamation works associated with the landscaping of the lands of Greenpark House. Description
In reclaimed pasture, immediately E of the townland boundary with Goatisland, in NW quadrant of a possible field system (LI040-047001-). A barrow complex (LI040-049001/011-) lies to the NE. Not marked on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map. Depicted as a raised oval-shaped area (dims. c. 18m N-S; 20m E-W) defined by a scarp on OSi 25-inch map. Described by O’Kelly (1942, 53) as a 'Type A earthwork' consisting of; ‘A circular platform which has a slightly hollow centre. Outside it is a fosse and outer bank. It is not possible to say if the platform had a bank at its edge or not. The entrance is not recognisable and the fosse and outer bank are continuous all around. The height of the platform is about 4’ [1.2m] and the overall diameter is 150’ [45.7m]. The monument is visible on aerial photographs (BGE 1/50000 2549) taken 03/11/1984 on the Bórd Gáis Éireann gas pipeline. Partially levelled monument visible as a circular shaped area defined by a fosse on OSi orthophoto taken between 2005-12. OSi 25-inch map. Described by O’Kelly (1942, 52) as a 'Type B earthwork' consisting of; ‘A circular platform on the edge of which there is a bank. it is surrounded by a fosse. The max. height of the platform over the fosse bottom is 5' [1.5m] and the overall diameter is 70' [21m]. The entrance is not recognisable'. Description
In small grove of trees. Not marked on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map. Not visible due to dense cover of vegetation. Described by O’Kelly (1942, 52-3) as a 'Type B earthwork' consisting of; ‘A very small structure situated on the top of a mound which may be natural or partly artificial. It consists of a slight platform on the edge of which there is a bank surrounded on the outside by a fosse. The overall diameter is 36’ [10.9m]. The mound on which it stands has been cut on the one side by the public road and on the other by a drainage trench’. Levelled monument described by Westropp (1916-17, 492) as; 'To the east of the road, which cut off an angle of field near a little stream, is a very small house-ring. I found no one to explain, but it was unmown and ungrazed, and may be an old burial-place. It is oval, only 21 feet [6.4m] north and south and 24 feet [7.3m] east and west inside; its ring, hardly a foot high inside, rises 4 feet [1.2m] over a fosse 3 feet [0.9m] deep and 6 feet [1.8m] wide, the ring being of the same width.’ See attached Google Earth orthoimages. Description
In reclaimed pasture, 150m E of townland boundary with Goatisland. A possible barrow (LI040-048002-) lies 50m to the SE and an earthwork (LI040-047002-) within a field system (LI040-047001-) lies 120m to the SW. Not marked on OSi historic maps. Identified by the Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 147, AP 5/2109) as a circular cropmark of a possible barrow. Monument visible as a circular cropmark (diam. c. 12m) on Digital Globe orthoimage taken between 2011-2013. No surface remains visible on Google Earth orthoimages.
