  Description

  Modern house located on site of Cloghatacka (Cloch an tSeaca) Castle which was depicted as a tower house type building standing on an island in the middle of the River Maigue on the 1657 Down Survey map of Kenry Barony (Hib. Reg.). In 1840 the Ordnance Survey recorded that in this townland there was a 'drawbridge over the river, with a good house for the keeper. Boats pay 3 shillings for passing through' (OSNB Kilkeedy Parish 994). The island castle depicted on the 1657 Down Survey map of Kenry Barony may have controlled the ferry crossing over the River Maigue. The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that Patricke Kearny of Kilmallock an Irish Papist was the proprietor of Cloghatacka on there stood 'a stump of a Castle' (Simington 1938, 383). Westropp (1906-07, 149) recorded the following details about Cloghatacka Castle; 'Site marked near the Ferrybridge on the Maigue. 1583 Cloughytackie C[astle]. in Corcamore, Conor Moyle O'Brien held Cloughitackye (Des. R., 8, 40b). 1588 Granted to Ric. and Alex. Phitton (Fi. 5175). 1611 Sir E. Fitten granted the C[astle]. to T. Butler (Inq. Chan., 6b). 1657 The lands and stump of a C[astle]. held by Marg.   Description

  In grassland 400m E of the River Maigue and 230m E of castle site (LI012-043----). Depicted on the 1840 OS 6-inch map as a wedge-shaped platform. The site is depicted as a non antiquity on the 1897 25-inch map where it is shown as an irregular-shaped field (approx. dims. 25m N-S x 37m E-W) indicated with a solid line in the same fashion as the surrounding field boundaries.   Detached five-bay single-storey thatched house, built c. 1800, having multiple-bay single-storey extensions to rear (north) elevation and three-bay two-storey block to east. Pitched slate roof with rendered chimneystack. Rendered walls. Square-headed openings with two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows and concrete sills. Square-headed opening having bipartite two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows and concrete sill. Square-headed openings with timber battened doors. East block having slightly projecting end-bay to front (south) elevation with single-bay single-storey extension to east elevation. Pitched slate roof with overhanging eaves and rendered chimneystacks. Rubble limestone walls. Square-headed openings having moulded render surrounds, concrete sills and replacement uPVC windows. Square-headed opening with moulded render surround and replacement glazed overlight over timber panelled door. Single-storey outbuilding to west having pitched corrugated-iron roof and rubble limestone walls. Pair of square-profile roughcast rendered piers to west with limestone cappings and double-leaf cast-iron gates.

  Detached four-bay single-storey thatched house, built c. 1800. Pitched thatched roof with render over red brick chimneystacks. Rendered walls. Square-headed openings having concrete sills and replacement timber casement windows. Square-headed opening with half-glazed timber panelled door. Three-bay single-storey outbuilding to east having pitched corrugated-iron roof. Painted rubble stone walls. Square-headed window and door openings. Pair of square-profile rendered piers to south with double-leaf cast-iron gates and sweeping rendered walls terminating in second pair of piers.
