- LI040-044 Ringfort - rath
Description
In pasture, 75m W of townland boundary with Ballynamona, 100m NW of townland boundary with Baunageeragh and 70m N of townland boundary with Cottage. Depicted on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map as a raised oval shaped area defined by a scarp. Shown on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as a circular-shaped platform (diam. c. 28m) defined by a scarp with outer fosse from SE-S-W-N-NE. Monument described by O’Kelly (1944, 52) as a ‘Type C Earthwork’ consisting of; ‘A high circular mound surrounded by a fosse. The monument has been partially dug away on the E side and here the edge of the mound and fosse are gone. The tip of the mound seems to have been flat originally but it now slopes to the E. The overall diameter is 160’ [48.7m] and the height of the mound is 12’ [3.6m].’ The monument is visible as a raised circular-shaped area defined by a fosse on OSi orthophoto taken between 2005-12. Description
In pasture,140m S of townland boundary with Ballinstona North, a possible ditch-barrow (LI040-275----) lies 115m to the SE. Not marked on OSi historic maps. Identified by the Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 142, AP 5/2115) as a circular cropmark of a possible barrow. Trace of monument visible as a circular cropmark (diam. c. 5m) on OSi orthophotograph taken between 2005-2012 and on Google Earth orthoimage dated 16/03/2016. Description
In reclaimed pasture, 145m SW of townland boundary with Ballinstona North, two possible ditch-barrows (LI040-274/294----) lie 115m to the NW and 116m to the NE respectively. Not marked on OSi historic maps. Identified by the Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 143, AP 5/2115) as a circular cropmark of a possible barrow. Trace of monument visible as a circular cropmark (diam. c. 5m) intersected at E by a linear cropmark running NE-SW on OSi orthophotograph taken between 2005-2012 and on Google Earth orthoimage dated 28/06/2018. Situated on reclaimed poorly drained pasture. Ring-barrow (LI040-275----) 116m to SW. Cropmark of possible ditch-barrow consisting of a circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 12m) defined by a fosse that is visible on Google Earth orthoimage taken 16/03/2016. Outline of possible ditch-barrow visible on OSi orthophoto taken 2005-12 and faint cropmark visible on Digital Globe orthoimage taken 2011-13.
