Description
In flat pasture, 36m E of townland boundary with Glenma and 86m S of townland boundary, enclosure (LI039-008----) lies 250m to SW. Not marked on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch sheet. Depicted on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch sheet as a roughly oval-shaped platform (dims. c. 26m N-S; 30m E-W) defined by a scarp. Monument visible as an oval-shaped cropmark on OSi orthophotograph taken between 2005-12 and on Google Earth orthoimages. See attached Google Earth orthoimages. Description
In flat pasture, 315m S of Kilbroney Church (LI039-102001-) and St. Broney's Well (LI039-012002-). Not marked on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch sheet. Depicted on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch sheet as a linear earthwork (L. c. 53m) running N-S, where it is shown as a possible sunken or hollow way flanked by a bank on either side. Upstanding monument visible as a linear feature overgrown with trees (L. c. 69m) on OSi orthophotograph taken between 2005-12 where traces of the levelled road are visible as a linear cropmark running NW-SE (L. c. 74m) to N of upstanding section. Possible roadway leading N towards Kilbroney Church, or could be the remains of a watercourse such as a mill-race. Paleochannel or old watercourse visible running into linear earthwork at NE visible on Google Earth orthoimage dated 05/04/2006. Description
Church ruins described by O'Donovan as a 'mere ruin, but from what remains of it you may ascertain that is measured on the inside forty five feet [13.7m] in length and twenty feet [6m] in width. its west gable is destroyed down to the very foundations, as is also the south wall except two small fragments. A considerable part of the east gable remains, as also of the north wall, from which it can be seen that it was a very rude little building not more than four hundred years old. the east gable has a remarkably rude window, which is now disfigured on the inside and outside. The north wall is three feet [0.9m] thick and about eleven feet [3.3m] high' (OSL Athlacca Parish, 111). Westropp (1904-5, 432) recorded the following details about Kilbroney; 'Tullerboy, Keilbruoiny, between Athlacca and Tullorboy, 1410. Lewis says it was built by the Templars on their manor of Eoss Temple (i., p. 84). Fabric - It is 45 feet [13.7m] by 20 feet [6m]; fragments of the south and east walls, with defaced east window, remain; they are 11 feet [3.3m] by 3 feet [0.9m]. Description
Ó Danachair (1955, 209) recorded the following details about St Broney's Well; ‘Close to the ruin (LI039-012001-) called Kilbroney. The well is now dry and the stone work collapsing. Description
Ruins of Athlacca House standing on N side of the Morningstar River depicted on 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map and known locally as the 'Mansion House' may have been built on site of or incorporated medieval castle of Athlacca. Modern farmyard now stands on site of Athlacca House. Athlacca Church (LI039-014001-) and graveyard (LI039-014002-) 210m to E. Westropp (1906-7, 168) recorded the following details about Athlacca; '1285 Athleketh, a manor of Maur. FitzGerald, frequently appears with Adare, as a manor of the Earls of Kildare. 1318 J. Gower held it. There is little independent mention of it. 1655 David Lacy held Aghleakagh C[astle]. mill, and orchard (C.S., xxiv., p. 9 ; D.S.A., 42). 1666 Granted to C. Ormsby (Act Sett.). The C[astle]. was standing in 1827 (FitzGerald, i., p. 323), destroyed before 1840'. The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that in 1641 David Lacy of Athlacca an Irish Papist was the owner in Athlacca of 'a Mill [LI039-115----] an orchard and twoe good tatch houses, with a Castle' (Simington 1938, 126). Tower-house type castle depicted on the 1654-7 Down Survey map of Coshma Barony (Hib. Reg.). In 1840 the Ordnance Survey recorded that 'in the S of the td. [Athlacca North] is an old ruin. Mansion House - Old Court, near Athlacka Village. In ruins. An ancient residence of the De Lacy family (OSNB Athlacca Parish]'.
