Description
In pasture, at SE edge of estuary inlet of River Shannon. Monument, depicted as trapezoidal enclosure (c. 30m N-S; c. 25m E-W) on 1923 OS 6-inch map, has been levelled. No trace of monument evident when inspected. Flood bank skirts edge of inlet to N; enclosure abutted this at NW corner and may therefore have been part of flood-bank system. - LI003-010 Dam
Description
In wooded area, at foot of NNW facing slope, in flood plain of River Shannon. Linear ditch (Wth. 1.55m) defined by inner scarp-edge (H 3.05m) along S side and by earthen field bank (H 2m) along N edge. Ditch, extending on NE-SW axis for c. 35m, is heavily clogged with organic debris. Bank is masked by vegetation cover. This probably a drainage feature associated with the nearby river. - LI003-011 Ringfort - rath
Description
In rough pasture, atop hill with panoramic views. Sub-circular area (37.5m N-S; 34m E-W) enclosed by two concentric earthen banks, with intervening (Wth 1.35m) and external fosse. Inner bank (int. H 0.75m; ext. H 0.9m), best preserved ENE->SW, becomes scarp-like SW->NW (H 1.05m; Wth 5.5m). Outer bank (int. H 1.1m), best preserved ENE->SW where incorporated into field boundary, much denuded NW->ENE (int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.55m). Intervening fosse heavily masked by overgrowth ENE->SW. Outer fosse (D 0.05m; Wth 1.3m) barely perceptible NW->ENE, not evident elsewhere. Interior, under rough pasture, slopes down gently to NW. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
