Description
In pasture, atop hill. Circular area (40.7m N-S; 41m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.35m; ext. H 2.05m) with external fosse (D 0.15m; Wth 1.5m). Bank best preserved SW->NNW, becomes scarp-like NE->S. A dry-stone field wall cuts across fosse and runs along top of bank NNW->NE. Fosse best preserved along W arc, is much silted up elsewhere; low counterscarp earth-and-stone bank (ext. H 0.3m) SW->NNW. Causeway entrance (Wth 3.75m) at SSW. Description
The Ordnance Survey Name Books describe Ballynacourtia House Lower as 'a rectangular building two stories high in good repair, and was built about 150 years ago' (OSNB). The site is now occupied by an abandoned single-storey house with a gable-ended slated roof and a central chimneystack. It is a vernacular house of 18th/early-19th century appearance. In rough pasture, on break in N-facing slope. Circular area (29.5m N-S; 29m E-W) defined by scarped edge (H 1.95m; Wth 2m) S->SE, and enclosed by eroded earthen bank (int. H 0.55m; ext. H 0.8m) SE->S. Scarp best preserved along N arc. Field boundary runs tangentially to base of scarp along E side. Concentric earth-and-stone bank (int. H 1.45m; ext. H 1.2m) runs for c. 4.5m at SSE, may be remains of counterscarp bank. Interior, covered by mature deciduous and coniferous trees, slopes down to NE. In pasture, atop ridge with panoramic views over surrounding countryside. Circular area (28.9m N-S; 29m E-W) enclosed by two concentric earthen banks, with intervening fosse (Wth 2.2m). Inner bank (int. H 0.7m; ext. H 1.15m), best preserved NW->E, becomes scarp-like E->S. Outer bank (int. H 2.1m; ext. H 0.9m) best preserved at N. Gaps in outer bank at SE (Wth 2.1m) and S (Wth 1m).
