In reclaimed pasture, 35m S of townland boundary with Raheen. Barrow (LI049-235----) lies 60m to the NW, enclosures (LI049-038/040---) lie 85m to the NW and 55m to the SW, respectively. Annotated ‘Illaunaholata Moat’ on OSi historic maps. Depicted on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map as an oval shaped platform defined by a scarp. Shown on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as a raised oval-shaped platform (dims. c. 18m N-S, 22m E-W) defined by a scarp. Levelled earthwork visible as a rectangular-shaped cropmark with linear cropmarks intersecting the site at N, W, S and SW on Bórd Gáis Éireann Curraleigh West-Limerick gas pipeline aerial photographs (BGE 1/5000; 2580) taken 03/11/1984. Description
On the E bank of the Morningstar River that marks the townland boundary with Knockaunavlyman and c. 40m S of a forestry plantation. Not depicted on OSi historic maps. Identified in 2006 by archaeologist Enda Mahony in the course of an archaeological assessment in advance of afforestation, described as an; ‘horse-shoe or U-Shaped mound with an opening (1.5m in width) to the west. The mound measures 4m in external diameter and rises to a height of between 0.5 and 0.75m above the surrounding ground level’. No surface remains visible on Google Earth orthoimages.
