- LI024-052 Ringfort - rath
Description
In deciduous woodland, 20m to E of a stream, which marks the townland boundary with Ballynaclogh. Annotated ‘Rathaniska’ and depicted on the 1840 ed. OS 6-inch map as an oval-shaped earthwork (O'Dwyer 1959, 98). Surveyed by the ASI in 2008 and described as a circular-shaped area (diam. 24m) enclosed by a bank (int. H 0.45-0.55m; ext. H 1.35-1.4m; Wth 5.5-5.75m) from WSW-N-E-S-SSE and reduced to scarp (H 0.95m) elsewhere with possible external fosse (Wth 4.85m; D 0.5m) visible from WNW-NW only. The bank is interrupted by a pond (dims. c. 6m E-W; c. 5m N-S) from SSE-S-SSW. AThe interior is generally level and is planted with deciduous trees. Linear mounds (Wth 0.8m; H 0.1m) which cross the interior (long-axis NNW-SSE) seem to be related to tree planting. Monument is visible as a tree-planted area on Digital Globe orthophotos taken 2011-13 and on Google Earth orthoimages taken 28/06/2018. Description
In pasture abutting the townland boundary with Ballyshoneen and Ballynaclogh. Enclosure (LI024-233----) 20m to SW. The ringfort (LI024-052----) known as ‘Rathaniska’ lies 50m to SE. The enclosure is not depicted on historic OSi maps, nor is it visible on OSi orthoimages taken 2005-12 or on Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013. Identified by Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 104; AP 4/3672) as a circular enclosure (ext. diam. c. 30m). The site is obscured by shadow on the most recent Google Earth orthoimages taken 18/11/2018. Description
In flat pasture 65m E of the townland boundary with Ballyshoneen. Ring-barrow lies 90m NE of the ringfort (LI024-052----) known as ‘Rathaniska’ and 24m NNE of an enclosure (LI024-234----). The ring-barrow is not depicted on historic OSi maps, but it is faintly visible on OSi orthoimages taken 2005-12 and on Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013. Identified by Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 92; AP 4/3672) as a circular ring-barrow (ext. diam. 10.3m) that consists of a central circular area surrounded by a fosse. The ring-barrow is visible on the Google Earth orthoimages taken 18/11/2018. Description
In wet pasture 10m S of the townland boundary with Ballyhurst and 15m W of the townland boundary with Ballyshoneen. Enclosure (LI024-231----) 20m to NE. The ringfort (LI024-052----) known as ‘Rathaniska’ lies 35m to ESE. The enclosure is not depicted on historic OSi maps, nor is it visible on OSi orthoimages taken 2005-12 or on Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013. Tentatively identified by Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 103; AP 4/3672) as a circular enclosure (ext. dims. c. 42m N-S; 48m E-W). The site is faintly visible on the most recent Google Earth orthoimages taken 18/11/2018. The monument is not depicted on historic OSi maps. It is visible on OSi orthoimages taken 2005-12. Not visible on the Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013. Identified by Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 41; AP 4/3672) as a circular ring-barrow (ext. diam. c. 10m) comprised of a central mound surrounded by a fosse and external bank. Description
In reclaimed pasture, 170m W of a stream, which marks townland boundary with Knockballyfookeen (O'Dwyer 1959, 73; Barry 1981, 83). Annotated 'Rathbaun' on the 1840 ed. OS 6-inch map and depicted as a square-shaped earthwork. Surveyed by the ASI in 2008 and described as a roughly square-shaped area (38m NE-SW; 33m NW-SE) enclosed by a bank (int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1.45m; Wth 3.6m) best preserved at NW and NE with external fosse (overall Wth c. 4.35m; D 0.5m) that has been filled in at SE and SW, possible entrance gap (Wth 4m) at WSW. There are livestock gaps (Wth 1.5m and Wth 3m) at NW and NE where the bank is reduced to a scarp. Monument is visible as a rectangular-shaped tree-covered earthwork on Digital Globe orthophotos taken 2011-13 and on Google Earth orthoimages taken 28/06/2018. Description
Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c. 1850. Hipped slate roof with terracotta ridge tiles, rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Rendered walls having render quoins and render platband. Square-headed openings, paired to outer bays, with one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows, those to ground floor having render label mouldings. Square-headed door opening with flanking render pilasters and cornice, replacement uPVC door and sidelights. Rendered boundary wall to front of site with roughcast panels, render copings and wrought-iron pedestrian gate flanked by square-profile piers.
