Description
When last inspected in 1975, the bottom two storeys of a tower house had been incorporated into a farm building. The main features identified were a newel stairs lit by a slit ope and base batter on the exterior. The original studded wooden doorway is housed in the National Museum, Dublin (Ua Broin 1944, 194-5; Ball 1905, III, 120-21; Handcock 1991, 66-7, 2nd ed). This area has since been developed leaving no visible surface remains. Compiled by Geraldine Stout
- DU022-005002 Church
Description
The OS Letters describe the remains of a church which was formerly accessible from Kilnamanagh Castle (DU022-050001-) (Herity 2002, 31-2). This church was associated with a disused graveyard (DU022-005003-) which according to the Letters was enclosed by a wide and deep fosse which had a drawbridge (O'Flanagan 1927, 34). This is thought to be the site of the early monastery of Cell Manach Eascrach (Ua Broin 1944, 194-195; Ball 1905, 3, 20-1; Handcock 1991, 66-67, 2nd ed). The area has been developed leaving no visible surface remains. Compiled by Geraldine Stout
- DU022-005003 Graveyard
Description
The OS Letters (ed. O' Flanagan 1927, 63-4) describe the presence of a disused graveyard beside Kilnamanagh castle. It contained disturbed headstones and human remains which had been uncovered in the late 18th century. Further human remains were exposed in the early 1940's (1944, 195). There are no visible remains above ground. Compiled by Geraldine Stout
- DU022-005004 Ritual site - holy well
Description
Site of St. Kevin's Well in the parish of Tallaght was a natural spring well located beside Kilnamanagh Castle (DU022-005001-) (Ó Danachair 1958, 86). According to Ó Danachair; 'There is no memory of devotions; the water is used for domestic purposes only. The well is said to have sprung up at the place where Kathleen, St. Kevin's temptress, did penance' (ibid.). The holy well was described by Ua Broin (1944, 195) as follows; 'Nearly 60 years ago a mound was pointed out to the present writer, between the shed and the passage to St. Kevin's Well. Saint Kevin's well beside the castle commemorates that saint's sojourn here for early training. Another well quite near, N. 21.2 cms., W. 2.5 cms., O.S. 22 is marked Holy Well on map 30 but tradition does not claim that it was a holy well'. This well was located SW of Kilnamanagh Castle and accessed from steps. It was still present in 1975. There has been considerable development in the area since with the construction of housing over this ecclesiastical site (DU022-005005-) leaving no surface remains visible of St. Kevin's Well. Folklore collected from St Mary's School, Tallaght recorded the following details about St Kevin's Well; 'It was in Kilnamanagh that St Kevin spent his novitiate, and it was while reading his "office" that "Kathleen" first saw him. She returned again and again to see him, and in the end tried to speak to him. But Kevin would have none of her and taking a handful of nettles struck her in the face telling her to be gone. Immediately Kathleen fell on her knees begging his forgiveness, and on the spot a well sprang up. This well is still known as St. Kevin's Well, though the water has been changed, through a shore, to the other side of the castle' (The Schools’ Collection, Volume 0795, Page 039; https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4428219/4386863/4456593). Amendments to the previously permitted residential development (File Register Reference Number SD24A/0029). The proposed amendments to the permitted development consist of A) The construction of a 12sqm extension to the permitted ground floor of House No. 4, B) The amendment of the permitted first floor layout and associated roof layout of House No. 4 resulting in the extension of the main roof profile over part of the northwest corner of the first floor and replacing the permitted dormer accommodation. This proposed amendment will also result in the reduction of the permitted first floor area by 12sqm and the lowering of the roof height over the proposed ground floor garage construction, C) The inclusion of two number attic gable windows in the proposed northwest elevation of House No. 4 facing Ashfield Avenue.

This is thought to be the site of the early monastery of Cell Manach Eascrach (Ua Broin 1944, 194-195; Ball 1905, 3, 20-1; Handcock 1991, 66-67, 2nd ed).
