- ME005-006 Ringfort - rath
Description
Located towards the top of a S-facing slope, it is depicted on the 1836 and 1908 editions of the OS 6-inch map and it is described as ‘Fool’s Fort’ on both in gothic lettering. This is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 38m N-S; 37m E-W), the S half of which slopes down to the S (H 2m). It is defined by a grass-covered earthen bank (Wth of base 5-5.4m; int. H 0.2m at S to 1.1m at N) that has become overgrown since 1968 (Digitalmap), with an outer fosse (at N: Wth of base 2.6m; ext. D 0.3m) NNW-NE. The original entrance is likely to be that at ESE (Wth of base 1.1m). Archaeological testing (99E0477) to the S and SE failed to produce any related archaeological material (Murphy 2000). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revision: 3 September 2018
- ME005-111001 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a col with lower ground to the NW, NE and SE and higher ground to the SW, but the exact location is not known. A rath and souterrain (ME005-111002-) were partially excavated (92E0052) in Cormeen as part of a Bord Gáis Eireann pipeline from Dunleer, Co. Louth, to Mullagh, Co. Cavan. All features were truncated and only survived in the subsoil. A gully (L 5.4m; Wth 0.4m; D 0.1m) had three shorter similar gullies in a line c. 0.5m to the E. Another slighter gully was 2.1m further E and a fourth was 2.5m W of the first. There were a few small pits, and three post-holes were placed at the entrance to the souterrain that extended W, while six other post-holes were dispersed about the area. A section of a ditch (Wth 2.6m; D 1m) covered with re-deposited subsoil was excavated 6m W of the souterrain trench, and a gully at the E edge of the excavated area is interpreted as the E side of a rath (int. diam. 43m). - ME005-111002 Souterrain
Description
Situated on a col with slightly lower ground to the NW, NE and SE and higher ground to the SW, but the exact location is not known. A rath (ME005-111001-) and souterrain were partially excavated (92E0052) in Cormeen as part of a Bord Gáis Eireann pipeline from Dunleer, Co. Louth, to Mullagh, Co. Cavan. All features were truncated and only survived in the subsoil. A souterrain was exposed as a trench (L 10.3m; Wth 0.8m at the entrance to 2.5m at W) associated with gullies and post-holes within the rath. The souterrain was an undifferentiated passage with three steps leading to the entrance at E. It might never have been completed and was backfilled with re-deposited natural clay with charcoal flecks (max. D 2.6m at W). There was no silt on the floor, and the uppermost fill was rich in charcoal. (McConway 1992; McConway and Halpin 1992) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 6 September 2018
