Description
Situated on a gentle N-facing slope. Topsoil stripping (02E0194) in advance of a gas pipeline identified a localised spread of broken and burnt stone in a darkened soil (1A/20/1), which was completely excavated (02E0641). The monument had been truncated by agricultural activity but three small spreads of broken and burnt stone overlay a rectangular trough (dims 1.5m E-W; 0.9m N-S; max. D 0.65m) which had several intercutting and slightly earlier pits to the E and NE filled with silty clays in the main, as was the trough. There was a large oval pit (dims 3.6m NW-SE; 2.6m NE-SW; max. D 0.5m) to the W filled with burnt mound material. Radiocarbon dates of 2565-2366 cal. BC and 2463-2145 cal. BC were returned for two of the pits. Description
Situated on a fairly level landscape. Archaeological centre-line testing (04E0415) by J. Dempsey of Testing Area 1, Contract 2, prior to the construction of the M3 motorway in March to May 2004 (excavations.ie: 2004:1336) identified archaeological material, which was completely excavated (E003057) by S. Linnane as Cooksland 1 in July 2006, although the material had suffered in the interim (excavations.ie 2006:1537). When first identified (Dempsey 2004, 28-9) it consisted of a fire-reddened subsoil base with fills of small heat-shattered stones, lenses of oxidised clay, charcoal and charcoal-flecked silty clay. When finally excavated only the fire-reddened oxidized clay base (diam. 1m; T0.13m) remained (Linnane 2008). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 26 April, 2022

Description
Situated on slight rise on a gentle SW-facing slope. Archaeological centre-line testing (04E0415) by J. Dempsey of Testing Area 1, Contract 2, prior to the construction of the M3 motorway (excavations.ie: 2004:1336) identified burnt mound material, which was completely excavated (E003058) by S. Linnane as Cooksland 2 in July2006 (excavations.ie 2006:1538). The principal feature was a spread of broken and burnt stone (diam. 7.5m; max. T 0.1m) over a grey clay into which a flat-bottomed subrectangular trough (dims 2.05m N-S; 1.5m E-W; max. D 0.45m) had been set just N of the burnt spread. A thin layer of black silty clay covered its base beneath traces of wooden planks and there was a stake-hole at each corner. The wooden sides did not survive but a pale grey clay with sandstone inclusions was used as caulking behind the planking. The trough was filled with a black silty clay with frequent inclusions of burnt stone over the collapsed caulking. A sample of alder charcoal produced a C14 date of 1877-1613 cal. BC (BETA 237581). A retouched flake from an end-scraper was recovered from the lower fill of the trough. Three pits (dims 3.6m x 1.4m; D 0.4m: 2.4m x 0.95m; D 0.35m: 2.6m x 1.1m; D 0.65m) were c. 25m to the NE, but no artefacts were recovered from them, and there were two unmapped, double-ditched field banks in the area. (Linnane 2008) See the attached plans from Linnane 2008 (figs 7, 8) _1 Contour plan (interval 0.02m); _2 Trough; Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 26 April 2022

Description
Situated on a slight NE-facing slope. Archaeological centre-line testing (04E0479) by T. O’Neill of Testing Area 17 of Contract 1 prior to the construction of the M3 motorway identified archaeological features (excavations.ie: 2004:1337) that were fully excavated (E003045) by S. Linnane as Cookstown 3 in June 2006. Some post-holes and linear features recorded in the testing were not present at a later stage, but a small curvilinear trench (L 2m; Wth 0.7m; D 0.15m) is continued by another trench (L 2.85m; Wth 0.8m; D 0.15m) at its S end, forming a slightly curving arc SW-N, although the junction is obscured by a pit (dims 1.71m x 1.14m; D 0.35m). A few other pits and post-holes are early and pre-date land-drains and plough furrows that relate to each other in a rectangular system aligned NE-SW. A sample of hazel charcoal from a small isolated pit (0.45m x 0.15m; D 0.07m) produced a C14 date of 3966-3787 cal. BC, placing it at the start of the Early Neolithic. The pit was filled with a silty clay and contained some cremated bone that was largely animal but one piece is identified as human. Six undiagnostic flints were recovered in the topsoil. Description
Situated on a slight N-facing slope. Archaeological testing (04E0146) by A. Hayden in advance of a housing development identified a curving trench and some pits that were fully excavated under the same licence (excavations.ie 2004: 1234). The trench (L 8m; max. Wth 1.5m; max. D 0.18m), filled with silty loam, curves around the N side of a pit (diam. 1.2m; D 0.1m) that was filled with charcoal-rich silt and had fragments of iron slag together with a furnace bottom. A small pit (diam. c. 0.5m) filled with charcoal-rich silt was inserted in the curving trench and there was a post-hole at the W end of the trench. Five possible post-holes were c. 2-3m S of the pit and these could have provided a shelter for a small metal-working site, while the trench on the N side provided drainage. (Hayden 2004) See the attached plan from Hayden (2004, fig. 3) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 4 May 2022
