A field bank cuts the monument at NW and SW, and only faint traces of the scarp and fosse are visible to SW of it. At NE, a linear hollow (Wth 6m), up to 0.5m in depth, runs off at right angles from the fosse. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
- GA007-030 Earthwork
Description
In pastureland. Marked on 3rd ed. of OS 6-inch map (1930) as a linear fosse, angular in plan. The visible remains match those on OS 6-inch map: the fosse (Wth 6m max.) averages only 0.2-0.3m in depth, is poorly defined, and now partially filled. The N arm follows a roughly NE-SW axis (L c. 120m) but meanders somewhat towards its N end where it fades out. The W arm, now largely filled in, runs W from S end of the former, following a NE-SE axis for 70m. The gap marked on OS 6-inch map about mid-point is still visible. Possibly part of a field system. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
