- GA114-151 Barrow - ring-barrow
Description
In pastureland at the S end of a small esker. This circular ring-barrow (diam. 24.6m), in fair condition, is defined by a flat-topped mound (diam. 9.9m; H 0.6m) encircled by a fosse (Wth 4-5m) and a low external bank (Wth 2.6-3m; int. H 0.1-0.4m; ext. H 0.35m) which is badly eroded at N. The centre of the mound has been disturbed. (McCaffrey 1952, 29, no. 21; 1955, 225; Killanin and Duignan 1967, 68) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 3 September 2018 This monument is subject to a preservation order made under the National Monuments Acts 1930 to 2014 (PO no. 4/1970).
- GA114-152 Ringfort - rath
Description
In level pastureland. Marked on the OS 1:2500 plan (surveyed 1912-16) as a subcircular enclosure (c. 36m E-W; c. 32m N-S) defined by a bank and fosse with traces of a possible outer bank from NE to SE. A field boundary curves around the monument from WSW to N. Classified by McCaffrey (1952, 287, no. 23) as an ‘Earthen fort’ which was ‘extremely damaged’; only a section of the bank (L 48m; Wth 3.6m; H 1.2m) survived; the outline of the remainder was visible in the ploughed field. In a ‘modern plantation’ to the N of the bank were traces of a ‘ditch’ that may have been associated with the rath. No visible surface trace of the bank survives. However, the outline of the monument is clearly visible on the OSi digitalglobe aerial photography. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 7 March 2018
- GA114-153 Ringfort - rath
Description
On a S-facing slope in grassland. Circular rath (diam. 33m), in fair condition, defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. The interior is raised above the level of the surrounding field. The inner bank is visible for most of its circumference and is best preserved from E to S. A road overlies the outer bank from SSW to NNW. Two hollows in the E part of the interior appear to be the result of quarrying. A souterrain (GA114-153001-) is associated. (McCaffrey 1952, 287, no. 28) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 8 March 2018
- GA114-153001 Souterrain
Description
Within the interior of a rath (GA114-153----). Recorded by McCaffrey (1952, 287, no. 28) who noted that it was destroyed. On inspection in November 1982 a local man recalled entering the souterrain as child. No visible suface trace survives. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 8 March 2018
- GA114-154 Ringfort - rath
Description
In level pastureland. Marked on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 26m). Classified by McCaffrey (1952, 287, no. 27) as an ‘Earthen fort’ which was ‘very ruinous’. It was defined by a raised area or scarp with some evidence of stone-facing and was completely obscured by overgrowth. No visible surface trace survives. A souterrain (GA114-154001-) is associated. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 8 March 2018
- GA114-154001 Souterrain
Description
Within the interior of a rath (GA114-154----). Named 'Cave' on the 1838 and 1921 edition of the OS 6-inch map. No visible surface trace survives. When McCaffrey (1952, 289, no. 27) visited the monument he could not locate the souterrain due to dense overgrowth. On re-inspection in November 1982 no visible surface trace was noted. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 8 March 2018
- GA114-155 Enclosure
Description
In flat pastureland. Marked on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 25m). McCaffrey (1952, 286, no. 22) recorded that it was 'Not present' during his survey. No visible surface trace survives. However, very faint traces of its outline are visible on the OSi Ortho_ITM aerial imagery (Google 2019). Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 31 July 2019
