- GA103-185 Graveslab
Description
This roughly rectangular late-medieval graveslab (H 0.83m; Wth 0.59m; T 0.09m) is against a field wall on the NE side of a T-junction. It is an interesting example of folk art and bears a Latin cross with a roundel at its head. The roundel is decorated with an eight-petalled marigold motif. Further decorative features include a rectangular panel with a fret-like pattern at the junction of the arms and shaft, and almost square panels with simple duplex knots at the end of each arm. Below the right-hand arm the date 1596 is visible. The panel below the left-hand arm bears a figure holding what appears to be a flag aloft. The carving is partly in the round but is mainly flat. The end of the shaft is worn. The upper panels above the arms bear an indecipherable inscription in two lines (information from J. Higgins). According to local information, the graveslab originally stood in the field across the road from the cross (GA103-187001-) c. 140m to the SW (O'Connell and Korff 1987, 9), which may associate it with the children's burial ground (GA103-187002-). - GA113-193 Field boundary
Description
In rough pastureland. A series of field walls curving roughly from NE through S to N and possibly mirroring the outline of a ringfort (c. 47m NE-SW; c. 38m NW-SE) are indicated on the 1922 edition of the OS 6-inch map and are also visible on an aerial photograph (CUCAP AHJ 24) taken in June 1963. Another NNE-SSW running field boundary cut through it from N to SSE. On inspection all the field walls, apart from the NNE-SSW running one, had been cleared away. The current evidence is insufficient to warrant accepting this as an archaeological monument. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 11 July 2019
- GA113-194 Ringfort - cashel
Description
On a gentle rise in rough pastureland. Poorly preserved subcircular cashel (E-W 27m) defined by two collapsed drystone walls that are visible except from S to SSW. The walls are separated by a berm, which varies in width from 4.5m at E to 8m at W. The inner wall (Wth 2.5m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.5m) is best preserved from NNW to NNE; a field wall abuts its outer wall-face from SSW to NNW. This wall then runs off in a NW direction, cutting across the outer wall. A field wall overlies the outer wall (Wth 2m; H 0.25m) from NNE to SSE and another field wall cuts through the monument from NNE to S. - GA113-195001 Ringfort - cashel
Description
On a hillock in partially reclaimed rock outcrop. Poorly preserved circular cashel (diam. 26m)defined by two much-collapsed drystone walls separated by a wide berm (Wth 4m). Both the inner (Wth 1.45m; int. H 0.75m; ext. H 1.2m) and outer (Wth 1.3m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.9m) walls are mainly reduced to a collapsed spread of stone and few inner or outer facing-stones survive. A stone-lined gap (Wth 1.7m) at ESE appears to be original. A trackway (GA113-195----) skirts the monument at ESE. To the S two rectangular fields (L 35m; Wth 15m) may be associated with the cashel.
