- GA086-083 Quarry
Description
In pastureland. A hachured feature marked on the 1947-8 revision of the OS 6-inch map proved on inspection in 1986 to be an oval depression, most likely a disused sand or gravel quarry. As it is of post-AD 1700 date it does not come within the remit of the Archaeological Survey of Ireland. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 22 July 2014
- GA086-255 Burial
Description
In June 1972 a pair of human feet was discovered in a bog at Cloonahinch, near Woodlawn, Co. Galway. Professor E. Rynne visited the site and reported that the find spot had been completely destroyed by the finders in their attempt to locate the body. The remains were apparently discovered close to the base of a bog hole (D c. 1.4m diam c. 0.9m). The pit was filled with a matted yellow sedge-like material, above which was a c. 0.3m thick layer of dark peat. It is possible that the feet were the only surviving part of a more ancient bog body which had been exposed and dispersed over years through turf cutting (Ó Floinn 1995, 227) (pers. comm. M. Cahill and M. Sikora, NMI). Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 3 December 2010
