- ME011-029001 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated at the W end of a broad but low hill. This is a raised circular grass and scrub-covered area (diam. 44m N-S; 43m E-W) defined by a slight earthen bank (at SSE: Wth of base 10m; Wth of top 3.2m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 3.2m) NW-E-S on a high scarp. The overgrown scarp is separated by a fosse (at SSE: Wth of top 7.9m; Wth of base 3m; ext. D 0.1m) E-SW from an outer bank (at SSE: Wth of base 6m; ext. H 0.3-1m) SE-SW and NNW-ENE. The beehive chamber of a souterrain (ME011-029002-) is inside the perimeter at W where the interior of the rath is higher. The original entrance to the rath is not identified. Rath (ME011-030----) is c. 90m to the SE. Description
Located inside the bank of rath (ME011-029001-) at W where the interior of the rath is higher. The beehive chamber (present diam. 2.2m) is almost filled with stones but the passage might be represented on the rath surface 8m to ESE by a depression (dims 5m NE-SW; 1.7m NW-SE; D 0.1m) and 3m to the S of this another depression (L 9m; Wth 2.3m; D 0.3m) extends SSW to the edge of the scarp of the rath. Description
Situated on a slight rise on top of a broad hill. This is a circular grass-covered area (diam. c. 28m NE-SW; 26m NW-SE) defined by an earth and stone bank (at NW: Wth of base 2.5m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.6m; at SE: Wth of base 6.8m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.9m) reduced to a low scarp NW-NNE, but the perimeter is absent NNE-E. There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance. Rath (ME011-029001-) is c. 90m to the NW and rath (ME011-031----) is c. 85m to the SE while fulacht fia (MEW011-032----) is c. 75m to the SSE. Description
Situated on a knoll at the crest of the E-facing slope of a broad hill. This is an oval grass-covered area (dims 37m NW-SE; 27.5m NE-SW) defined by a slight earth and stone bank (Wth of base 5-5.6m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.1m at WNW to 1.8m at ENE), with some internal stone facing at E. There is no visible fosse and there are several modern gaps in the perimeter, including an old quarry at N, but the original entrance is probably at S (Wth of base 3m). Rath (ME011-030----) is c. 85m to the NW, and fulacht fia (ME011-032----) is c. 60m to the WSW. Description
Situated in a hollow at the base of a S-facing slope and with a small pond c. 50m to the SW. This is a grass-covered oval mound (dims 20m NE-SW; 11.5m NW-SE; max. H 0.4m), with an indentation (dims 3m x 3m) for the trough on the NW side. Rath (ME011-030----) is c. 75m to the NNW and rath (ME011-031----) is c. 60m to the ENE. Description
Located on a small hill in a gently undulating landscape. This is a raised, circular, grass and scrub-covered area (diam. 60.5m NE-SW; 56.5m NW-SE) defined the lip of an overgrown earthen bank (Wth of base 6-7.5m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 2.9m at NW to 3.8m at SE) separated by a fosse (Wth of base 3.5-5m; ext. D 0.2-0.4m) that cannot be traced SE-SSW and WSW-WNW from traces of a possible outer bank (Wth of base c. 8m; ext. H 0.4m) that are only visible at SE and might be the natural slope. The original entrance is not identified.
