- GA096-023 Ringfort - cashel
Description
In level pastureland. Known locally as ‘Cave-Fort’ (Redington 1916a, 55) and classified by McCaffrey (1952, 150, no. 48) as a circular ‘Stone fort’ (diam. c. 43.3m) defined by a drystone wall with an entrance gap (Wth c. 1.5m) at N. No visible surface trace of the cashel wall survives but its outline is preserved in a later curving field wall. A souterrain (GA096-023001-) lies in the NE quadrant of the interior. Description
Within the NE quadrant of a cashel (GA096-023----). This drystone-built souterrain (L 7.2m; Wth c. 1.2m) runs E-W, curving slightly to W. Access is gained at the E end via a series of sod-covered stone steps. The floor is covered with earth, stone, boulders and rubbish. Description
In level pastureland. Poorly preserved circular rath (diam. 22.9m) defined by a bank overlain by a field wall. A road skirts the monument from S through W to N. A souterrain (GA096-024001-) lies within the SW quadrant of the interior. Description
Within the SW quadrant of a rath (GA096-024----). This souterrain is inaccessible due to collapse and it is so densely overgrown that is was not possible to estimate its length.
