- GA104-074001 Ringfort - cashel
Description
In reclaimed pastureland overlooking a turlough to the E. Classified by McCaffrey (1952, 218-19, no. 1a) as a ‘Stone fort’ (diam. 49.4m overall) defined by two concentric drystone walls. An internal wall ran N-S through the interior. The monument has been almost completely cleared as a result of field-clearance operations and only a section at NE now survives. Both walls are in a collapsed state and lie c. 7m apart. There is a souterrain (GA104-074002-) in the N half of the interior. According to Redington (1916a, 52), the interior was once used as a graveyard (GA104-074003-). Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 9 January 2017
- GA104-074002 Souterrain
Description
Within the N half of a cashel (GA104-074001-). Redington (1916a, 52) notes that on NW side of the cashel a souterrain ‘passes under both ramparts to the exterior of the fort’. The souterrain is evident in the N sector, to the E of an internal wall, and it is indicated by three roof lintels; a fourth has been removed. The interior of the passage (L 3.9m), which appears to run NE-SW, is being used as a dump and is inaccessible. (McCaffrey 1952, 219, no. 1a) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 9 January 2017
- GA104-074003 Burial ground
Description
Within a cashel (GA104-074001-) named 'Caherapheepa'. According to Redington (1916a, 52), 'the garth was once used as a graveyard and when afterwards it was cultivated, numbers of pipes were dug up. Placing pipes on graves was a well-known custom and Redington suggests that the name of the cashel may have originated from this custom. No visible surface trace of the graveyard survives. (McCaffrey 1952, 218-19, no. 1a) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 9 January 2017
