- GA029-104001 Ecclesiastical enclosure
Description
In low-lying level pastureland overlooking bogland to W. Poorly preserved circular enclosure (D c. 65m) defined by an inner bank, intervening fosse and possible outer bank. Traces of the inner bank (H 0.3m) are visible only at SE, W and NW. The wide flat-bottomed fosse survives from E through S to NNW. Traces of the possible outer bank are visible from SW to NW. There is a CBG (GA029-104002-) in SE quadrant of the interior. Within it, two lengths of parallel wall foundations (L 2.6m max., Wth 0.55-0.9m) are visible, both running on a NW-SE axis; possibly the last vestiges of a building. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
- GA029-104002 Children's burial ground
Description
In SE quadrant of a probable early ecclesiastical enclosure (GA029-104001-). Marked on 3rd ed. of OS 6-inch map (1927) as an irregular area (c. 35m by c. 20m) defined along W and N sides by a broken line. What is visible is a slightly raised area, roughly subtriangular in plan, bounded by a line of boulders on W and N sides and by the fosse of the enclosure from E to S. Though SW part is obscured by trees, a number of grave-markers are visible. These consist of small undressed moss-covered boulders aligned E-W. In N part stands a wrought iron cross (H 1m), with decorative hearts at the centre and on the terminals. According to local information, the last burial here took place 15 to 20 years ago. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
