- GA095-054 Enclosure
Description
On the S-facing slope of a hillock in pastureland. This heavily overgrown and poorly preserved rectangular enclosure (c. 55m E-W; c. 46m N-S) is defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. The inner bank (Wth 0.9m; base Wth 6m; int. H 2.4m; ext. H 2.5m) is best preserved along the W side. Later causeways cross it along the S side and at the SW and NW corners. The fosse (Wth 1.6m) is filled with rubble. The outer bank (base Wth 3.4m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 0.9m) is also best preserved along the W side, though field rubble is packed against its outer face. A field wall overlies it along the N side and it is much denuded along the E and S sides. The interior is divided by a N-S running field wall. A structure (GA095-054001-) is evident in the NE quadrant. - GA095-056001 House - 18th/19th century
Description
The house is described in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (Reg. No. 30409528) as follows: 'Detached E-plan country house, built 1838 with two storeys over raised basement. Further floor and flat roof added c.1970. Now in use as healthcare institution. East (entrance) and west elevations are five bays and have projecting tower-like middle bay with stepped corner buttresses, that to entrance elevation being fronted by canted oriel window and square-plan porch with fluted octagonal corner turrets having rendered openwork parapet, and with bartizan feature to each corner at original roof level. South (garden) elevation is seven-bay (nine-bay to later top storey), and has projecting end bays with slightly projections to front with triple-height canted-bay windows with rendered openwork balconies, canted central bay has windows to canted sides and buttresses to front corners. North elevation has deep returns of east and west elevations flanking partly infilled re-entrant corners, in turn flanking two-bay three-storey projection fronted by two-storey chapel. Flat roofs to main block and wings. Pitched slate roof to rear return and chapel, having decoratively rendered copings with bartizan-like details to return and having cross finial and pinnacles to chapel gable. Crenellations to parapet wall of garden front and chapel. Render chimneystack, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Painted lined-and-ruled rendered walls, upper floors having moulded sill courses and decorative render bands with quatrefoil and other motifs below windows. Moulded sill course to ground floor, and rendered plinth. Square-headed window openings, original floors having moulded render hood-mouldings to all except north elevation, with replacement timber windows. Replacement uPVC windows to later floor. Tudor arch double-light window to gable of rear return, hood-moulding. Tudor arch door opening to porch having painted moulded surround and timber panelled double-leaf doors with paned overlight, and moulded steps. Square-headed door opening to garden elevation having moulded render surround and label-moulding and glazed timber panelled door with paned overlight. Square-headed recent door openings to north elevation. Chapel has four-bay nave elevations, triple-light gable window with continuous render hood-moulding and stained glass. Tudor arch window openings to lower level, with replacement timber windows. Render balustrade to basement area to south and west elevations. House is set in extensive mature grounds. Appraisal This highly decorative country house was designed by George Papworth for Sir Thomas Redington. It is Papworth's largest surviving country house. The complexity of the plan is lent coherence by the comprehensive decorative scheme, with render string and sill courses to all elevations. The Redingtons of Kilcornan were responsible for the development and design of the village which has at its heart a walled village green with an imposing cenotaph to Thomas Redington. Kilcornan was originally a sixteenth-century castle of Ulick de Burgo. The house now serves as a training centre for people with learning disabilities.' - GA095-058 Enclosure - large enclosure
Description
On the S-facing slope of a ridge, c. 20m to the N of the Clarinbridge River in the old demesne land associated with Kilcornan House. This D-shaped enclosure (c. 106m E-W; c. 82m N-S), in fair condition, is defined by a bank and external fosse which curve from SW through N to SE; elsewhere a straight scarp forms the enclosing element. There is a causewayed entrance gap (Wth 3.6m) at ESE. The interior is subdivided by a series of low earthen banks. An old trackway lies immediately to the S and a road runs immediately to the N. (Redington 1912b, 174-5; Westropp 1919, 177; Killanin and Duignan 1967, 153) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 27 August 2019
- GA095-059 Church
Description
In flat grassland within the former demesne of Kilcornan House (GA095-056001-). On inspection in August 1983 this well-preserved medieval parish church, rectangular in plan (int. dims. 13.2m E-W; 10.5m N-S; wall T 0.84m), was undergoing restoration works that involved the insertion of a new floor, roof and windows. The four walls survived pretty much intact and were constructed of neatly laid rectangular limestone blocks with dressed sandstone quoinstones. A plinth was visible at the base of the external face of the S wall and internally at the base of the E gable. The main architectural features included a pointed arch doorway in the S side-wall, single-light transitional windows at the E end of this wall and in and the E gable. There were two small rectangular windows, one set above the other, in the W gable and these together with corresponding beam slots in the N and S side-walls indicated the former presence of a loft at this end of the church. A cross base at the E end belongs to a 19th-century cross now outside the church that is dedicated to and was erected by the Redington family (the former owners of Kilcornan House); it is dated 1899. Redington (1912, 179-80) records that a stone plaque depicting the Assumption (originally from Lavally House) also once lay within the interior of the church; it is now housed in the porch of the Catholic church in Clarinbridge (see GA095-069001-). Redington (ibid.) also noted that a 'small font and holy-oil slab' here also derived from Lavally. A possible graveyard (GA095-059001-) is associated. A castle site (GA095-056----) lies c. 310m to the NNE. (Westropp 1919, 178; O’Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 289, 291) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 21 February 2020
- GA095-059001 Graveyard
Description
Associated with a medieval church (GA095-059----). During the course of restoration works around the church in 1983 human bones were found near the S wall and one complete skeleton was uncovered to the E of the doorway. Scatterings of bones were also noted under the window in the E gable and along the N wall. These probably indicate the presence of a graveyard around the church though one is not recorded on the OS 6-inch maps and was not recorded by Redington (1912, 179-80) or O’Flanagan (1927, Vol. 1, 289, 291). Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 21 February 2020
- GA095-060 Church
Description
In woodland formerly part of Kilcornan Demesne. Described by Redington (1912, 182-3) as ‘a rectangular building in which, according to tradition, Mass was secretly said during penal times. The walls were '2ft. [0.6m] thick' and it measured ‘12ft. [4.3m] by 14ft. [3.6m]' internally and there was a narrow doorway in the E wall and a crude altar against the W wall. Beyond the doorway were the 'foundations of a larger enclosure' (GA095-060003-). All that survives are heavily overgrown sections of the W (L 4m), N (L 0.8m) and S (L 0.8m) walls, which survive to a maximum height of 0.6m, and the altar. Redington (ibid.) also noted two stone troughs (GA095-060002-) to the NW of the church, 'one at 10 yards [c. 3m] and the other at about 40 yards [c. 12m] from it'; these were not located. (McCaffrey 1952, 134-5, no. 40) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 21 February 2020
- GA095-060001 Ecclesiastical enclosure
Description
In woodland. Redington (1911-12, 182-3) noted 'the foundations of a larger enclosure' to the E of the doorway of the church (GA095-060----). No other details are provided. On inspection no visible surface trace was found. Possibly an ecclesiastical enclosure? Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 24 February 2020
- GA095-061 Flat cemetery
Description
On a gentle S-facing slope within the former demesne of Kilcornan House. Discovered between 1948-50 while digging for sand on the line of an old abandoned roadway (McCaffrey 1952, 31-2, no. 39b). Three cists were found, all appear to have been short cists. One was slab-built (L 0.66m; Wth 0.25m-0.38m), aligned SSE-NNW, with a single floor slab and roofed with a capstone. It contained the crouched skeleton of a youth and a vase. The second (L/Wth 0.46m) was built in a similar manner to the first but without a floor slab. It contained cremated bone. There are no details on the third but cremated bone and sherds of a vase are associated with it. Stray finds included cremated bone and a flint scrapper and the sherd of a possible vase (Waddell 1990, 94). No visible surface trace survives.
