This very well-defined circular ring-barrow (overall diam. 36.2m) is defined by a central flat-topped area (diam. c. 7.5m; H 0.1m) that is level with the surrounding field or perhaps slightly lower that it. The fosse is wide and deep and the outer bank is also wide and flat and slopes to the external field level. A gap in the NW quadrant may be modern. A slight depression in the central area may indicate disturbance. A rath (GA114-131----) lies c. 25m to the SE. - GA114-131 Ringfort - rath
Description
In level pastureland overlooking lower ground to the SSW. When inspected in October 1982, this very impressive and well-preserved subcircular rath (int. dims. c. 58m NW-SE; c. 48m NE-SW; overall dim. c. 96m NW-SE) was clearly visible and free of overgrowth. On re-inspection in January 2019 it was not as obvious due to the impact of a forestry plantation around it. The rath is defined by three banks and two fosses. The outer bank (Wth 1.4m; base Wth 5.5m; int. H 1m; ext. H 0.6m) is visible from SE through W and N to NNE. A roadway clips it from NE to SE. The middle fosse (Wth 2.75m), middle bank (Wth 2m; base Wth 6.5m; int. H 1.4m; ext. H 1.5m), inner fosse (Wth 3m) and inner bank (Wth 1.7m; base Wth 6.8m; int. H 1.5m; ext. H 2.5m) are visible all round but are obscured at W due to overgrowth. The interior is clear and featureless. An enclosure (GA114-133----) lies c. 98m to the WSW and there is a ring-barrow (GA114-128----) c. 80m to the NW.
