• ME037-009 Castle - motte
  Description

  Situated at the N end of a low N-S ridge with a W-E section of the River Boyne c. 50m to the NW at a point where the river turns N, and with a S-N section of the Boycetown River immediately to the E. The motte is attributed to William de Scurlog, a tenant of Hugh de Lacy, who gave his name to the townland (Wilde 1849, 104). This is an oval, flat-topped and grass-covered mound (dims of base 30m N-S; dims of top 9m N-S; 4.5m E-W; H 1.6m a W; 4.9m at S to 6.9m at N) with some trees. The parish church of Scurlockstown (ME037-010----) is c. 120m to the S at the other end of the ridge. • ME037-010 Church
  Description

  Situated at the S end of a small N-S ridge overlooking the point where a W-E stretch of the River Boyne turns N c. 170m to the N. A church at Scurlag is listed in the ecclesiastical taxation (1302-06) of Pope Nicholas IV (Cal. doc. Ire., 5, 256). Ussher (1622) describes the church as reasonably well repaired but the chancel was ruinous (Erlington 1847-64, 1, lxxxiv). According to the Dopping visitation (1682-5) the church and chancel had been ruined since 1641 (Ellison 1972, 9). The parish church of Scurlockstown is within a subrectangular graveyard (dims c. 53m NE-SW; c. 32m NW-SE) defined by masonry walls. According to Wilde (1850, 88) the chancel arch was rounded and there was a trefoil E window. The walls (Wth 0.8-0.85m; H 1.3-2m) of a nave (int. dims 10.35m E-W; 6.35m N-S) and chancel (int. dims 7.7m E-W; 4.4m N-S) are conserved but no features are evident, except the gaps for opposing doorways in the N (Wth 1.2m) and S (Wth 1.2m) nave walls. A gap at W (Wth 1.2m) is probably modern. The piers of the chancel arch (Wth 1.7m) are plain. Wilde (ibid.) mentions a cross in the graveyard and a disc-headed cross (span 0.52m; T 0.13-0.16m) is almost buried (visible H 0.3m) c. 15m S of the SW angle of the church. The octagonal base (dim. 0.5m; H 0.2m) of a font with cordons at top and bottom and dowel-holes to secure the stem is in the graveyard together with the octagonal stem (dim. 0.33m; H 0.34m) that has a cordon at the waist and matching dowel-holes. • ME037-011 Castle - tower house
  Description

  Situated at the top of a W-facing slope in the valley of the River Boyne at a point c. 200m SE of where it turns from a NW-SE to a SSW-NNE direction. The motte (ME036-009----) is c. 160m to the NW and the parish church (ME036-010----) is c. 150m to the W. According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) Gerrott Leynes owned 268 acres in Scurlockstowne in 1640 and on the property were ‘a castle, two mills and some Cottages’ (Simington 1940, 139). The castle is described and illustrated by Wilde (1849, 104) as a square tower with two projecting circular towers which contained stairs. There are a few grass covered stone mounds on the site in 1967 (SMR file). Archaeological testing (01E0316) in the environs c. 25m distant recovered no evidence of any attached features (Hayden 2003, 10), but investigation under the same licence c. 40m to the S and SW identified a stable (ME037-011001-) and other structures, while a kiln (ME037-011002-) and another building (ME037-011003) were recorded c. 80m and 100m SW of the tower house respectively. The remnants of a field system (ME0237-062----), which may have been associated with the settlement, survive c. 300m to the E. The excavated features are preserved beneath a white geotextile and a covering of topsoil. • ME037-011001 Stable
  Description

  Situated in a slight fold on a gentle W-facing slope, and located c. 40m SW of the site of the tower house (ME037-022----). Archaeological testing and excavation (01E0316) uncovered the foundations of a stable consisting of walls (Wth 0.6-0.9m) of one clay-bonded stone course creating a rectangular building (ext. dims c. 13m NE-SW; 7m NE-SW), the SW wall of which does not survive. It has a partly cobbled floor overlying some pits and gullies containing Leinster cooking ware. The entrance (Wth 1.6m) in the NW wall lacks door jambs and is approached by a cobbled path (Wth 1.6m) which continued across the building and may have exited through the SE wall. North of the path in the interior three stalls (dims 3.5m NE-SW; 1.6m NE-SW) were created by slot-trenches dug in the clay floor. South of the path in the interior there was a paved area in the S corner. Externally, there was a paved yard (dims 5m NE-SW; 3m NW-SE) immediately to the NW with a SW-NE covered drain that emptied into a SE-NW drain c. 1m N of the stable. Leinster cooling ware and Dublin glazed ware as well as horseshoe nails were found in ploughsoil and hillwash over the stable floors and cobbling. Some drystone walling SW of the stable could represent another structure. The foundation trench of a third structure with an oxidised clay floor was identified SE of the stable. The stable and associated features are preserved beneath a white geotextile and a covering of topsoil. (Hayden 2003, 7-9, 14) An early SE-NW ditch (Wth of top 4.8m; D 0.6m) with Leinster cooking ware is just N of the stable and earlier than it. The SE-NW drain contemporary with the stable is built it its fill. The ditch may have turned S to the E of the stable but this could not be investigated. A second SE-NW ditch (Wth of top 2.6m; D 0.4m) with the base of a parallel double-faced wall partly built in its fill on the N side is c. 10m N of the stable and extends SE (L c. 25m plus). Sherds of Leinster cooking ware were the only artefacts recovered from this ditch, but a floor of oxidized clay was just N of the wall at one point.   Description

  Situated on a gentle W-facing slope, c. 80m SW of the site of the tower house (ME037-011----). Archaeological testing (01E0316) uncovered a cut partly lined with stones (L 1.3m) on its N side. It was filled with layers of ash, and a clay pipe dating from the 1640s to 1660s was recovered from a sample excavation.   Description

  Situated on a gentle W-facing slope, and located c. 100m SW of the site of the tower house (ME037-011----). Archaeological testing and excavation (01E0316) uncovered the foundations of a rectangular building (int. dims 5.6m NW-SE; 3m NE-SW) defined by the fragmentary outer face of a wall and a slightly sunken clay floor, oxidized in places. There may have been a porch at NW, and there were three areas of distinctive cobbling outside to the SW, W and NW. A SE-NW ditch or open drain (max. Wth 2m; max. D 0.5m) ran past the NE wall. Sherds of seventeenth and eighteenth century pottery, clay pipe stems, and residual medieval sherds were recovered from the thin topsoil.   Located on the ridge of a meandering N-S esker ridge. A small hachured feature (ext. diam. c. 25-30m) is depicted only on the 1912 edition of the OS 6-inch map. It is not visible at ground level in pasture, and has not been visible on any aerial images.   Description

  In 1935 the National Museum of Ireland received a report from Rev. Moran, Maynooth College, of burials visible on the banks of the river Boyne, c. two miles S of Trim.The burials were said to be located on either side of a stream which runs between the graveyard on its W side and the church(ME037-010----) on its east side very close to the Boyne river.   Description

  Situated on a fairly level landscape c. 300m E of the site of Scurlockstown tower house (ME037-011----) and the associated structures. The remnants of a field system covering about 4 ha (c. 10 acres) are visible on Google Earth (15/02/2019), and also on OSAP (2012). The fields are large (dims up to c. 130m x c. 50m) and appear to be defined by silted drains. The field boundaries are parallel with the current field boundaries, and many of the fields are occupied by cultivation ridges.
