• GA114-061 Enclosure
  Description

  In rolling pastureland, formerly part of Creggaclare Demesne. Marked on the OS 6-inch maps as an irregular tree-filled enclosure. It is defined by an irregular bank (Wth 1.5m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 0.6m) and the interior has been disturbed by digging and the felling of trees. Though classified by McCaffrey (1952, 282, no. 6a) as amuch-denuded oval ‘Earthen fort’ (c. 41m N-S; c. 32m E-W), the monument may be a landscape feature associated with the demesne. • GA114-063 Church
  Description

  In the N interior of a cashel (GA114-063001-). An unroofed, two-period, L-shaped structure comprises a probable 17th-century church (int. L 16.85m NE-SW; Wth 5.16m) at the NE end of which a similar sized building (int. L 16.8m NW-SE; Wth 5.3m) was attached at a right angle. Both structures are built of randomly coursed, rubble limestone masonry, have similar wall thicknesses (T 0.66-0.75m), and all walls stand to original height. A late 19th/early 20th-century Bingham mausoleum abuts the NW wall of the earlier church. This earlier church was entered originally through a doorway (Wth 1.2m) in the SW gable wall. The lower portion of the doorway was subsequently infilled and a twin light window was inserted in the upper area, and a later doorway with fine ashlar jambs was inserted in the SE sidewall, opposite a similar doorway in the NW sidewall giving access to the mausoleum. The earlier church is lit by a tall, square-headed window (H 2.35m; Wth 1.06m) in the NE gable wall, which has a small, rectangular mortared stone altar below (L 1.06m; Wth 0.8m; H 1.28m), and by a smaller, square-headed window (Wth 1m) near the NE end of the NW sidewall. The later structure is lit by flat-arched window (Wth 1.45m) in its SE gable wall, by opposing twin-light windows (Wth 1.3m) towards the NW ends of the NE and SW sidewalls, and by a third twin-light window at the SE end of the SW sidewall. • GA114-063001 Ringfort - cashel
  Description

  At the NE end of a narrow strip of deciduous woodland, surrounded by level pasture, on former demesne grounds. A roughly circular area (diam 35m) is defined by a very substantial drystone wall, built in straight sections of large inner and outer stones facing a rubble core (T 1.9-2.4m; int. H 1-1.6m; ext. H 1.3m at E-2.1m at N). The N-half of the interior contains a 17th-century church (GA114-063----) with a later extension and a late 19th-century Bingham family mausoleum. A wide piered entrance was created in the cashel wall at SE to allow access to these structures, and the cashel wall was narrowed (Wth 1.3m) at WNW to accommodate the construction of the mausoleum. • GA114-184 Architectural fragment
  Description

  Built into a roughly ENE-WSW running garden boundary wall, to the rear of a house, this architectural fragment (Wth 0.78m; H 0.35m; D 0.2m) consists of a large roughly rectangular block of worked stone. The top of the stone is roughly dressed, while its face is very finely dressed and has a chamfered flat-headed opening (max. Wth 0.36m, narrowing to 0.27m) in its lower half. When viewed straight on, this looks like the arch-stone of a window. However, on the right-hand side of the stone, the partial figure of a knight (H 0.2m), carved in relief, is visible. Only the head, arms and torso are depicted. The figure is wearing a flat headdress, the arms are flexed and the hands appear to be holding something. The left side of the face is slightly damaged. The position of the figure on the side of the stone indicates that it was intended to be seen. It is possible that the stone may have been an arch-stone over a recess or alcove, or it may have been part of a piscina. The figure is similar in posture to the knight holding an axe on the highly decorated 15th-century tomb (RO039-055004-) of Felim O'Conor in Roscommon friary (RO039-055001-). The original location of the fragment is unknown.   Description

  Mausoleum, erected c.1890, set within walls of ruined late medieval church, itself within Early Christian ecclesiastical enclosure. Gable-fronted entrance vestibule to south-east, with adjoining lower hipped-roofed chamber to north-west. Cut limestone roof to chamber, slate roof with limestone coping to entrance vestibule. Rubble limestone walls, coursed tooled limestone wall with plinth course to front elevation, with carved limestone crest. Pointed arch recessed panel to south-west side of vestibule. Pointed arch opening to front elevation, having chamfered cut limestone surround and cut limestone steps. Square-headed door opening with double-leaf cast-iron doors. Tiled floor to vestibule.

  Description

  Outbuildings, built c.1800, remaining to north-west of ruinous remains of country house, arranged to face courtyards. Seven-bay two-storey outbuilding to north of house, having pitched slate roof with some cast-iron rainwater goods, timber eaves course, lined-and-ruled rendered walls with stone plinth course, cut limestone quoins and exposed rubble limestone walls. Square-headed openings with cut limestone surrounds and sills, and some timber-framed windows. Five-bay two-storey outbuilding, with breakfront having gabled dormer above middle, building having half-hipped slate roof with timber and cut limestone eaves course, rubble limestone walls. Segmental-headed vehicular opening to front with cut-stone block-and-start surround and double-leaf timber battened door, and square-headed openings elsewhere, with tooled sills to window openings. Multiple-bay single-storey outbuilding having central two-storey projecting bay, with pitched slate roof having red brick chimneystacks and timber bargeboards, dressed limestone walls with cut-stone quoins. Square-headed openings with chamfered cut-stone surrounds, some with timber fittings and doors, and one opening to north-west side elevation having iron-frame window. Pair of four-bay single-storey buildings facing each other, with pitched slate roofs, timber bargeboards, cut and rubble limestone walls having tooled limestone quoins, and square-headed openings having tooled surrounds and timber battened doors. Remains of rubble limestone walled garden and field boundary walls to north-west of buildings.
