- GA115-022 Ringfort - rath
Description
On a N-facing slope in grassland. This poorly preserved rath is defined by the arc of an earthen bank curving from SE through S to SW; otherwise no visible surface trace survives. Within the interior is a children's burial ground (GA115-022001-) and a souterrain (GA115-022002-); part of the latter overlies the enclosing bank. - GA115-022001 Children's burial ground
Description
Within the interior and on the bank of the surviving S portion of a rath (GA115-022----). The children's burial ground is defined by an unenclosed irregular area within which a number of set stones indicate graves. A souterrain (GA115-022002-) lies immediately to the N. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 3 January 2018
- GA115-022002 Souterrain
Description
In the SE sector of the interior of a rath (GA115-0222----) and to the N of a children's burial ground (GA115-022001-). This inaccessible drystone-built souterrain (L >12m) consists of a passage (L c. 5m) running N-S. It was possible to see into it beneath one of two exposed roof lintels at its N end. At the time of visit it was filled with water. Another displaced roof lintel was visible, jutting out from the bank of the rath, c. 7m to the S of this section, indicating that the souterrain continued further southwards and possibly beneath the bank of the rath. According to local information, it continued in a southerly direction for at least a further 10m. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 3 January 2018
