- GA102-038 Ringfort - rath
Description
In improved pastureland overlooking Galway Bay to the S. This roughly circular rath (diam. 30m), in fair condition, is defined by a bank of earth and limestone boulders and it is best preserved from NW to NE; a later drystone field wall overlies it from SE to SW. A N-S running field wall clips the monument at E and a boreen cuts it a W. Within the interior a subcircular cairn of stone and boulders (5.5m by 3m; H 1m) is visible. Holt (1912, 227) suggested it may mark a ‘rifled sepulchre’. Holt (ibid.) also noted a similar mound to the W that marked the entrance to a ‘souterrain’ (GA102-038001-). (McCaffrey 1952, 176, no. 1) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 25 April 2018
- GA102-038001 Souterrain
Description
Within the rath (GA102-038----). According to Holt (1912, 227) there was another mound to the W of the mound of earth and stone which is visible in the interior. It apparently masked the entrance to a souterrain. No visible surface trace of it survives and no trace of the souterrain was noted. - GA102-039 Enclosure
Description
On Tawin Island in an area of commonage. Holt (1911-12, 249, 151, no. 1) noted a curved wall made up of large flagstones set on edge. It was believed by local residents to be a cattle shelter that was erected in the 18th century. On inspection in May 2008 an oval area (dims. 32m N-S; 24m E-W) was visible. It was defined by the wall (H 1.2m; T 0.55m) noted by Holt (ibid.) from WSW to N (C 19m); from N to SE a low sod-covered wall (Wth 5.95m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H0.55m) was visible and from SE to WSW it was levelled. The wall was constructed of vertical upright boulders. A small enclosure abutted the inner face of the wall at NNW and the interior of the enclosed area sloped towards the NE. A field bank associated with a field system (GA102-040003-) abuts it at S. Possibly an 18th-century cattle pen. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 10 July 2019
- GA102-039001 House - indeterminate date
Description
On Tawin Island in an area of commonage; storm waters collect in a natural depression visible c. 6-8m to the WNW, just behind shoreline. Coastal defences in the form of rock armour have been deposited along the shoreline. This D-shaped house (dims. 5m NE-SW; 4m NW-SE) abuts the inner wall-face of a possible enclosure (GA102-039----) at NNW. it is defined by the remains of a low wall (int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.65m; T at top 0.5m; T overall 2.45m) from NE to SW. The upper portion of the wall appears to have been rebuilt in places. The interior contains collapsed stone from the wall of the enclosure. Possibly of 18th-century date. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 10 July 2019
- GA102-040 Enclosure
Description
On Tawin Island, in low-lying commonage close to the foreshore and c. 235m to the SE of Kilcolgan Point. This poorly preserved subrectangular enclosure (19.5m E-W; 13m N-S) came to light following aerial reconnaissance by Markus Casey in August 1999 (SMR file). It is defined by a bank of earth and stone. A small gap (Wth 1m) is evident at NE. Low banks of earth and stone extending outwards from each corner are part of an associated field system (GA102-040003-). (Holt 1912, 227) Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 10 July 2019
- GA102-040001 Enclosure
Description
On Tawin Island in low-lying commonage, on a low rise, c. 35m to the ESE another enclosure (GA102-040----). This surectangular area (dims. 10m ENE-WSW; 8m NNW-SSE) came to light following aerial reconnaissance by Markus Casey in August 1999 (SMR file). It is defined by the remains of low bank (Wth 5.5m; int. H 0.15m; ext. H 0.95m) along the SW and NW sides and by gentle scarp (Wth 3.5m; H 0.3m) to the NW and NE. It may be a natural rise in the field which was enclosed by field banks. Field walls associated with the field system (GA102-040003-) radiate from it at NW and NE. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 10 July 2019
- GA102-040002 Enclosure
Description
On Tawin Island in low-lying commonage, on a low rise, c. 60m to the NE of another enclosure (GA102-040----). This subcircular enclosure (dims. 11.5m ENE-WSW; 10m NNW-SSE) came to light following aerial reconnaissance by Markus Casey in August 1999 (SMR file). It is defined by a low bank (Wth 5.05m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.55m) which is best preserved from NW to NE. There is a large gap (Wth 7.5m) at ENE. Field banks associated with a field system (GA102-040003-) radiate from it at S and WNW. Another field wall radiating from it at ENE has been truncated by a trackway immediately to its ENE. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 10 July 2019
- GA102-040003 Field system
Description
On Tawin Island in low-lying commonage. Aerial reconnaissance by Markus Casey in August 1999 revealed a field system and associated enclosures (GA102-040----, GA102-040001- and GA102-040002-) and a possible house site (GA102-040004-) (SMR file). The field system consists of a series of low field banks (Wth 4.8m; int. H 0.18m; ext. H 0.2m) covering the area c. 200m NW-SE by c. 153m ENE-WSW. Four field banks radiate from the enclosure (GA102-040----): at NE, SE, SW and NW. The NE running bank extends for a length of 25m. The SE bank runs NW-SE for 16m and then turns towards the ENE (L 20m) to the possible enclosure (GA102-040001-). The field bank (L 11m) at running from the SW corner runs for 11m and then turns to the NW (L 14m). The field bank from the NW corner extends in an irregular fashion. Other field banks include one (L 32m) running between the possible enclosures (GA102-040001- and GA102-040002-) and another (L 20m) extending to the E of the latter enclosure (GA102-040002-) before it peters out. Other possible field banks exist further to E and N but these are very low in profile. A possible enclosure (GA102-039----) abuts the field system to the N. Description

This rectangular house site (dims. 7.5m E-W; 6.75m N-S) came light following aerial reconnaissance by Markus Casey in August 1999. It is defined by a low bank (Wth 3.1m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.15m) along the N and E sides. There is a gap (Wth 2.5m) at the W end of the N side. The interior is level. A trackway running E-W is visible to the N. A field system (GA102-040003-) may be associated. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 10 July 2019
- GA102-041 Stone circle
Description
On Tawin Island, in grazing land close to the foreshore. Holt (1911-12, 249) recorded a slight elevation that was partly enclosed by the arms of a large shallow pool, and on which there were a number of granite boulders that may have formed part of an irregular stone circle. He was informed that 'the appearance of a circle was more marked, before other boulders of the series were broken up for building.' On inspection in May 1992, five irregularly shaped granite boulders (max. H 1.7m; Wth 2.4m; T 1.8m) enclosed a roughly oval area (30m NE-SW; 26m NW-SE); a slight depression in the interior at N may have marked the socket of a boulder that had been removed. Two of the boulders were recumbent but one of them was not set into the ground; one other boulder also did not appear to be set. On re-inspection in May 2008 no visible surface trace of the boulders survived. According to local information, large boulders were removed from this area in the late 1990s to build up coastal defences along the shoreline to the N. Not precisely located.
