Description
Located on a low rise on the E bank of the S-N canalised Blackwater River. This is raised and grass-covered oval area (dims 40m N-S; 28m E-W) defined by a scarp (at E: Wth 4.5m; H 2m; at N: Wth 5m; H 1.2m), which is slightly truncated by the stream at W. There is no visible fosse or entrance. This is separated by a berm (Wth 11m at N to 14m at E) from an outer fosse or drain (at N: Wth of top 5m; int. D 1.2m; ext. D 0.3m; at E: Wth of top 6.5m; int. D 1.2m; ext. D 0.6m; at S: Wth of top 6m; int. D 1.6m; ext. D 1.6m) that survives NW-E-SW. An entrance through the outer fosse is not identified. Description
Situated in a level landscape with the S-N Blackwater River c. 500m to the W. An area of about 10 acres (c. 4 ha) is divided into rectangular plots (dims c. 14m x c. 8m to 28m x c. 25m) by silted ditches (Wth 6m; D 0.3m) or banks (Wth 2m; H 0.2m). At the S edge of one field (dims 25m x 25m) are three possible house sites (dims 7m x 7m) defined by low earthen banks. The largest rectangular enclosure (dims 60m N-S; 60m E-W) is defined by earthen banks (Wth 3m; H 0.3m) and occupies the E of the area. At the NW of the complex a spring is the origin of a stream that runs off to the N. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987).
