Description
In pasture, on S-facing slope overlooking the river Bride. Fragmentary ivy-clad remains of rectangular structure (c. 23m E-W; c. 12.5m N-S). Three corners survive (SW, NW, and SE); SW and NW sections linked by infill wall built on original foudations. Wall faces battered but no original opes preserved. Tower/buttress-like projections on NW and SE corners original features. A Barry castle of which very little is known (Healy 1988, 431-2), known as 'Shanaclogh Castle'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994).
