Architectural heritage

• Bridestown Towers, outbuilding, 1740–1760 · Regional interest
  Description

  Two-storey outbuilding, built c. 1750, to west side of courtyard to rear, north, side of country house. Pitched slate roof, having rendered round-plan chimneystacks towards north, road, end, with string course near top. Two-stage octagonal-plan turret over north end of building, with moulded string course, and eaves courses. Pediment over front elevation of building, over paired vehicular entrance bays, flanked by carved finials and standing forward of stone bellcote with round-headed bell opening with imposts. Random rubble sandstone walls to main part of building and coursed dressed sandstone to turret. Round, oval and some diamond-shaped windows to first floor of front, east, elevation of building, with raised stone surrounds with keystones, and voussoirs at quarter positions. Some round-headed pitching doors to first floor. Ground floor has elliptical-arched vehicular entrances with brick voussoirs and stone keystones. Round-headed niche between arches and to first floor above, having brick dressings and stone hood-mouldings and keystones. Round-headed window and door openings elsewhere to ground floor, with hood-mouldings having keystones and plain block stops. Openings to first floor lie directly over those to ground floor. Round-headed windows to first stage of turret, with moulded stone hood-mouldings having plain block stops and triple keystones and stone sills. Oeil-de-boeuf windows to top stage, with moudled stone surrounds. Ogee-headed openings to ground floor of building at north end. North wall continues to west and has blocked segmental-arched gateway with slightly projecting piers. Similar turret to outbuilding to east side of courtyard, with rendered plinth wall between, with cast-iron railings and cast-iron double-leaf vehicular gate.

• Bridestown House, country house, 1800–1840 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached five-bay two-storey country house, built c. 1820, on site of eighteenth-century house. Older house faced north into formal courtyard of two-storey outbuildings. Present house faces south. Hipped slate roof with overhanging eaves and rendered chimneystacks. Rear elevation has square-headed replacement windows, oval window to frist floor with wheel-spoke glazing and round-headed stairs window with spoked fanlight, having cut limestone sills. Doorway with fanlight to front façade, approached by flight of steps. Two courtyards of outbuildings to north, that directly behind house being part of eighteenth-century complex of older house. Landscaped gardens to front of house.

Pitched slate roof with stone eaves course and rendered round-profile chimneystack with string courses to top and having square-plan base. Two-stage octagonal-plan turret over north-west corner, matching that to outbuilding to west, with moulded cornice and having pyramidal slate roof. Random rubble sandstone walls. Square-headed window openings to west side and round-headed windows openings to north side, window to latter having raised cut-stone surround. Round-headed doorway to north elevation. Round-headed window to first stage of turret, with alternately bricked-up and glazed windows, with stone hood-mouldings having triple keystones and plain block stops, and stone sills. Replacement widnows to glazed openings. Oeil-de-boeuf openings to top stage, with moulded surrounds. Rendered plinth wall, between building and second outbuilding to west with similar detailing, having cast-iron railings and cast-iron double-leaf vehicular vehicular gates.

  Detached two-storey outbuilding, built c. 1750, to north-east of country house, and forming east side of courtyard. Steeply-hipped slate roof with limetsone eaves course. Random rubble sandstone walls. Square-headed window to north gable with brick voussoirs and cut limestone sill. Trefoil-arched window openings to first floor of west elevation, having raised keystones and cut-stone sills. Slit openings to first floor of east elevation. Segmental archway to ground floor of east elevation, with stone voussoirs. Rubble stone boundary walls to roadside at east, with double-leaf recent metal gates supported on square-profile rubble stone piers. Elaborate stile to north-east on opposite side of road, comprising roughly coursed rubble sandstone lower half with integral steps and having square-headed pedestrian opening at top of steps, with stone coping and rounded top. Rubble stone walling to east and site of vehicular gateway to west.
