Located in earth-cut recess in steep slope. Stone surround at base; partially covered by stone lintel. Flat-topped outcrop of sandstone at front may act as altar. Still in holy use. Description
On W shore of Castle Haven with view commanding outer part of estuary; overlooked from W. Only battered face of N and E walls survives at ground level. Base of garderobe chute on N face. Photo of c. 1926 (Coleman 1926, 43) shows tower-house of three storeys with rounded vault over 1st floor; W wall entirely fallen; recessed gable-shaped gun loops on N face (see CO142-082---). Remains fell in 1926 (Healy 1988, 197). Castle of the O Driscoll clan, garrisoned by Spanish forces in 1601 (Burke 1905, 12-14). Description
Small promontory at mouth of inlet projecting E into Castlehaven. Neck defined by two rock cut fosses leaving an intervening ridge (H 1.2m). Possible draw-bridge support. Inner fosse (Wth 4m) flat bottomed; defined on seaward side by vertical rock face (H c. 3.5m) with low ramp at S end. Warrant issued 1651 to Co. Richard Townshend (Porter 1984, 130) describes construction of new fortification to defend Castlehaven which probably refers to this site. No visible surface trace of structure described within.
