Recorded monuments
- CO067-077 Fulacht fia
Description
A thin spread (min. dims. 6m x 6m) of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil was discovered during the monitoring of groundworks in advance of the construction of the N25 Youghal Bypass and was partially excavated in 2001. An unlined circular trough was found beneath the spread. It and the spread had been cut by a modern N-S field drain. A carbon sample recovered from the fill of the trough produced a radiocarbon date of cal. BC 1120-910. The monument extends to the E and W beyond the excavated area. (Noonan 2003d, 53) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
- CO067-079 Pit - excavated
Description
Discovered in 2001 during archaeological testing in advance of the construction of the N25 Youghal Bypass. Subsequent excavation revealed a small, truncated, subcircular pit (0.68m N-S x 0.65m; D 0.1m) with a large flat stone at the base. The pit consisted of three fills, the lowest of which contained the partial base of a prehistoric pottery vessel. A carbon sample from this pit produced a date of 2140-1870 cal. BC. (Noonan 2001a; 2003g, 55-6) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
