- CO073-064 Kiln - lime
Description
On W side of abandoned quarry. Well-preserved rectangular kiln (7m N-S; c. 5.5m E-W) built into break in slope. Front elevation (E) has arched recess (H 2.6m; Wth 2.9m; D c. 2m) with lower inner arch; innermost part of recess damaged and blocked by galvanised sheets. Front corners of kiln rounded. Circular funnel (diam. 2.3m) stone-lined, apart from top 3m which is lined with brick. Remains of earthen ramp to W; top of kiln enclosed by low stone wall (H 0.5m; Wth 0.4m). Description
In reclaimed pasture, to N of stream. Shown on 1939 OS 6-inch map as mound. Spread of burnt material noted. See Excavations 2002, 83. Archaeological test trenching was carried out to determine the extent of this fulacht fia in advance of the construction of the Ballincolig bypass. Its maximum measurements were determined as 19m E-W by 18m N-S. This fulacht fia was not excavated and it remains in situ. Description
Late 18th/early 19th-century 2-storey L-shaped house. Front elevation (S) of 4 bays, off-centre porch entrance; Wyatt windows in side bay to W, remainder sash windows. Gabled addition to rear on W side makes ground plan L-shaped. Shallow central gabled stairway projection to rear. Farmbuildings and cobbled yard to rear. Walled garden to S.
