- GA098-106 Ringfort - rath
Description
On a rise in undulating grassland and immediately to the E of Loughrea-Kilreekill road. Marked on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map as a subcircular enclosure (c. 41m N-S; c. 39m E-W ); partially levelled by the time of the 1947 edition. On inspection in April 1984 no visible surface trace survived. However, its outline is visible on the OSi digitalglobe aerial photograph. A souterrain (GA098-106001-) is associated. Description
In level pastureland. Circular rath (diam. c. 40m), in fair condition, defined by a bank and external fosse; the latter is only visible from SW through W to NE. A roughly E-W running field boundary clips the rath at S. There is a souterrain (GA106-077001-) in the NE quadrant of the interior. Description
In the NE quadrant of a rath (GA106-077----). This drystone-built souterrain (L >10.1m) consists of a rectangular passage (L 4.1m; Wth 1.6m; max. H 1.38m) running NE-SW. Access is gained at the SW end where a section has collapsed. A linear depression (L 6m; Wth 2.7m) extending beyond the point of access indicates that the souterrain continued further to the SW.
