- LA014-039001 Religious house - Franciscan friars
Description
In the middle of the village of Stradbally on the E side of Main Street opposite the Market Square. A Franciscan monastery was founded here in 1447 by O'More. The 1563 map now in the British Museum shows the friary at Stradbally as a long building with a Franciscan type tower rising out of the middle. (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 259). It was destroyed c. 1575, by Francis Cosby who constructed a fortified house (LA014-039004-) with its material. Mooney (1955, 155) stated that the abbey (LA014-039001-) of Stradbally had 'been thrown down by Francis Cosby, who built a dwelling house for himself in the same place from the materials'. Traces of the monastery were visible at the end of the eighteenth century but were removed by the nineteenth century (O'Hanlon and O'Leary 1907, vol. 1, 1, 327-329, 332-334, 410-411). No visible surface remains. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. - LA014-039002 Castle - unclassified
Description
In the middle of the village of Stradbally on the E side of Main Street opposite the Market Square. An O'Moore castle was situated here known as the Castle of Palace. It was destroyed by the Cosby family who built a fortified house (LA014-039004-) on its site (O'Hanlon and O'Leary 1907, vol. 1, 327-329). Described in 1907 as 'this castle was surrounded by a fosse, and it is said to have been called the Castle of Palace' (O'Hanlon and O'Leary 1907, vol. 1, 327). Mooney (1955, 155) stated that the abbey (LA014-039001-) of Stradbally had 'been thrown down by Francis Cosby, who built a dwelling house for himself in the same place from the materials'. Feehan (1983, 400) suggested that the 'O'More castle of Stradbally was replaced with a fortified house, apparently on the site of the present Abbey House, by the Cosbys'. No visible surface remains. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. - LA014-039003 Bawn
Description
In undulating countryside. O'Moores castle (LA014-039002-) in Stradbally was surrounded by a fosse (O'Hanlon and O'Leary 1907, vol. 1, 327) which may have been the fosse of a bawn belonging to O'Moores castle. Described in 1907 as 'this castle was surrounded by a fosse, and it is said to have been called the Castle of Palace' (O'Hanlon and O'Leary 1907, vol. 1, 327). No visible surface remains. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. - LA014-039004 House - fortified house
Description
In the middle of the village of Stradbally on the E side of Main Street opposite the Market Square. In 1592 the lands of Francis Cosbye included 'the friary and all its appurtenances, and also of a mill (LA014-077----) with the mill-race in Stradbally, and the several castles, messuages, cottages, gardens and orchards, with 345 acres of land' (O'Hanlon and O'Leary 1907, vol. 1, 328). According to O'Hanlon and O'Leary, 'O'Mores' castle (LA014-039002-) was pulled down by the Cosbies, and a fortified house was built in its place, which is now demolished' (O'Hanlon and O'Leary 1907, vol. 1, 328). According to Father Mooney, Francis Cosby built the fortified house with stone from the demolished friary (LA014-039001-) (Mooney 1955, 155). Today there are no visible surface remains of this levelled fortified house. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran.
