- TS055-013 Ringfort - rath
Description
In reclaimed grassland on an E-facing slope of rising ground in upland region, good views to N, E and S, higher ground to W. Ringfort consists of a small circular (diam. 18m NW-SE; 16m NE-SW) area enclosed by a poorly preserved earth and stone bank (base Wth 2m; top Wth 1.4m; ext. H 0.8-1.7m; int. H 0.1-0.3m) and external fosse (base Wth 1.2m; top Wth 3.5m; ext. D 0.3-0.8m) visible from N through E to S only, filled in elsewhere, causewayed entrance (Wth 3m) at SE. Poorly preserved interior with evidence of field clearance debris dumped in interior and bank has been reduced to a scarp by cattle erosion on the N through E to S of the ringfort. Monument intersected by field boundary at SW and NE as depicted on 1843 ed. OS 6-inch map. Originally the ringfort was located on wet grassland in upland region with slightly raised interior enclosed by a bank and outer fosse with entrance feature on the downslope at E. Interior slopes from W to E, following natural slope of terrain. Gap in bank at NE (Wth 1m) appears to be for livestock. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011

Description
In grassland on a SE-facing slope of rising ground in upland region, good views to E and S, higher ground to N and W. Ringfort consists of a slightly raised circular (int. diam. 30m N-S; 33m E-W) area enclosed by an earth and stone bank (base Wth 3.5m; top Wth 1.5m; ext. H 1-1.7m; int. H 0.2m) mainly reduced to a scarp and external fosse (base Wth 2m; top Wth 5m; ext. D 0.9m) visible from NE through N to NW and at S only, filled in along E quadrant of ringfort and destroyed by intersecting field boundary at W, gap in bank (Wth 1.5m) at S and livestock gap (Wth 2m) in bank at N. Only the wall-footings of a filled in Limekiln built into E face of ringfort survives. Monument intersected by field boundary at W on a N-S axis, this field boundary is not shown on the 1840 ed. OS amp but is shown on the 1903 ed. OS 6-inch map. Shallow quarry located in E quadrant of interior appears to be associated with the limekiln. Description
In reclaimed grassland on an E-facing slope of rising ground in upland region, good views to N, E and S, higher ground to W. Ringfort consists of a raised circular (diam. 24m N-S; 22m E-W) area enclosed by a poorly preserved earth and stone bank (base Wth 3.2m; top Wth 1.7m; ext. H 1-1.5m) mainly reduced to a scarp and external fosse (base Wth 3m; top Wth 7m; ext. D 1.7m) visible from W through N to E only, filled in elsewhere, possible entrance feature (Wth 3.5m) at E. Interior slopes from W to E following natural slope of the terrain. Monument intersected by field boundary at S on an E-W axis destroying the outer fosse along this quadrant as depicted on 1903 ed. OS 6-inch map. Wide flat-bottomed fosse on the W upslope of the monument and appears to have been re-cut and used as field drain from N to E where it runs into a field drain running N-S along bottom of field. Remains of outer bank visible along E quadrant of ringfort appears to be the remains of dumping after the fosse was re-cut and used as a drain.
