Recorded monuments
- GA107-086 Quarry
Description
On a hummock in pastureland. No visible surface trace survived of this hachured feature marked on the 1945 revision of the OS 6-inch map when inspected in 1984. An irregular patch of nettles marked its siting. Cartographic evidence suggests it was a sand or gravel pit. As it is of post-AD 1700 date it does not come within the remit of the Archaeological Survey of Ireland. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 11 August 2014
- GA107-087 Ringfort - rath
Description
On a ridge in otherwise level grassland. Marked on the 1945 revision of the OS 6-inch map as a roughly circular enclosure, cut across by an E-W roadway from roughly NW to NE. The rath (E-W 25m), which is very poorly preserved, is defined by a scarp from E to SE and by an earthen bank from SE through S to W. No visible surface trace of the enclosing element survives to the N of the road. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 1 April 2019
- GA107-088 Ringfort - rath
Description
In undulating grassland overlooking bogland to the N. This poorly preserved subcircular rath (39m N-S; 32.5m E-W) is defined by an earthen bank that is overlain by a field wall from NW through N to NE. Abutting the monument at S are two conjoined rectangular earthen enclosures; the W example (E-W 21m; N-S 19m) is accessible via a gap (Wth 6.3m) in the bank of the rath at S. Abutting this enclosure at E is a similar smaller enclosure (E-W 17m; N-S 15m). It is unclear if these are related to the rath or are later features. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 5 January 2018
- GA107-089 Enclosure
Description
On a S-facing slope in grassland. Marked on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map as a rectangular enclosure (c. 38m NW-SE; c. 34m NE-SW). It is now delimited by a short section (L 15.15m) of an earthen bank (Wth 1.6m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.4m) along the S side and a degraded tree-lined scarp along the N side. An external irregular band of nettles on this side may mark the line of a fosse. Elsewhere modern field banks form the enclosing element. According to the landowner, this was the site of a ‘fort’.
